$6 Million East Middle School Project Approved as District's Priority Renovation

The School Committee vote Monday night prioritizes the project with the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

Braintree Public School officials are seeking once again to work with the state on a major school overhaul, a $6 million project that would upgrade heating and electrical systems, replace ceilings and perform other renovations at the 50-year-old East Middle School.

Like the project at South Middle School in 2010, Braintree is aiming to partner with the Massachusetts School Building Authority, which could pay for a signicant percentage of the costs.

School Committee members voted Monday night to designate the East project as the district's first priority with the MSBA. Architect Habeeb & Associaties will start the design phase this spring, with bidding expected by the end of the year. Construction could begin in spring 2014 with a possible completion date of October 2014.

In 2011, the majority of East Middle School's windows were replaced through the Green Energy Repair Program.

Areas slated for improvement on this project include new school-wide lighting, ceiling replacement, a heating system rebuild, an electrical expansion and upgrade to address modern technological requirements, and the installation of digitally-controlled ventilators for better temperature control.
