Scheduling issues between the town and the vendor who is slated to design and build the pool and ice rink at Braintree High School have held up a final deal, though officials say that after decades of waiting to fulfill Capt. August Julius Petersen's wishes they are confident the project will get started this year. "Considering the thing has taken 48 years to get off the ground, I think the progress the town is making is good," said District 3 Town Councilor Tom Bowes, who served on a committee that reviewed the bids. Bowes said the committee's role was completed in March when it made a recommendation to Mayor Joseph Sullivan. Construction is underway on the Splash Pad at Watson Park funded by money from tugboat Capt. August Julius Petersen. The foundation is in at the eastern end of the park and water, sewer and electrical systems are being installed now, Recreation Director Nelson Chin said. The project remains on schedule and should be complete by the end of June. "It's coming along," Chin said. After Capt. Petersen died in 1963 and gave Braintree $65,000 for a pool at Watson Park, the funds grew to nearly $2 million and town officials fought to allow the pool to be placed elsewhere after some neighborhood residents criticized the original location. Delayed somewhat by the holiday season and difficulties getting together with one of the firms that bid on the Petersen Pool athletic complex, town officials will meet again later this week as they work on striking a deal to give a private company the ability to design, build and operate the pool and ice rink at Braintree High School and also receive preferential time for community and athletic team use. Two qualified bidders were identified by the town last fall, and a selection committee has met with one of the firms, Mayor Joseph Sullivan said.
