South Middle School is showing performances of FAME Jr. this weekend, and there are many tickets still left for purchase at the door. Tickets remain for the Saturday 2 p.m. show and more than 100 are left for the Saturday 7 p.m. show. Limited tickets are available for the Friday 7 p.m. performance. Tickets based on availability at the door. The show's musical director is Matthew Sawtelle and the choreographer is Elyse Hager. The musical is based on the movie and Broadway show of the same name and is set in New York City at the School for Performing Arts. All three new Braintree Public Schools administrators were congratulated by the School Committee Monday night.
The Braintree School Committee welcomed three longtime educators to their new administrative positions Monday night. Elaine Pagliarulo After a search process run by a committee of teachers, administrators and parents, Pagliarulo is now Assistant Principal at South Middle School. Pagliarulo has been a guidance counselor for nine years at South and was substitute there for one year before that. She has a bachelor's degree from Providence College, and a master's and advanced graduate certificate from UMass. She previously worked as a victim's advocate for Suffolk County and is an assistant coach for the women's basketball team at Emerson College. The school hosted its first annual 5K walk/run/roll road race to benefit two Braintree graduating seniors with $500.00 scholarship each.
Just less than 300 people registered for South Middle School's First Annual 5K Road Race held this past Saturday. The race benefited two Braintree graduating seniors with $500.00 scholarship each. Michael Baumgartner, who is a nationally ranked wheelchair athlete, completed his firsts ever 5K. On Saturday, March 23rd, 2013, at 9am, South Middle School is hosting its first annual 5K walk/run/roll road race to benefit two Braintree graduating seniors with $500.00 scholarship each. Participants will walk, race or roll through the route which begins and ends at South Middle School. Start time for wheelchair racer, Michael Baumgartner, a 7th Grade student at South Middle School and Michael’s pace keeper, Dan Roy will be at 8:50am. Michael is currently ranked number 1 in the United States (under 14 division), in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meter wheelchair races. This is Michael’s first 5k. Dan Roy has been competing in triathlons and endurance events, including several marathons and the Ironman, for the past 13 years. Braintree …

FITNUT is an evening where students showcase different activities to their parents/guardians.
FITNUT, a health and fitness program presented by 7th graders, is coming again this year to South and East middle schools. As Melonie Bennett, Director of Physical Education and Health, describes it in an email: "FITNUT is an evening where students showcase different activities to their parents/guardians. Over the course of the month students in the 7th grade having been learning about being active, benefits of exercise, how to be active and the importance of nutrition. After the presentation students, parents/guardians and guests are invited to the cafeteria for healthy snacks made by the food services department and to look at posters/displays that the 8th grade health students have designed." Emma Rutan is the third Braintree student selected in three years for the Project 351 service day.
As a member of the chorus, South Middle School eighth grader Emma Rutan helps out after school and is a mentor to younger performers. In her fifth year at her dance studio in Quincy, she is an assistant teacher. "It's a really fun way to express yourself and meet a lot of new people," Emma said of her experience with the South choir. For a similar reason, Rutan is excited about this Saturday, when she will be among 351 students from across Massachusetts selected for a service day by local educators. Chaired by Gov. Later this month the Braintree School Committee plans to vote on a proposal to add more space for younger students by next fall.
For years, Tony Fama has taught foreign language to eighth grade students in a modular classroom, separated from the rest of South Middle School by a pre-fabricated corridor and a set of double doors. Fama’s classroom, identical to the space where his colleague Jim Joyce teaches Social Studies next door, is lined with posters, student assignments and other decorations that spill out into the corridor. The ability to easily tack items to the walls – the inside material is essentially cork board – is one of the design features that set the modular rooms apart from regular classrooms. “I love it,” Fama said. The Braintree High School Athletic Association is still looking for golfers for its annual golf tournament on July 16 at the Braintree Municipal Golf Course. It is the 13th annual tournament and benefits the interscholastic athletic programs at BHS and South and East middle schools. You can participate as a player, hole sponsor, or supporter to help maintain the highest quality sports programs for our student athletes. Following the tournament, there will be a buffet-style luncheon at the Sons of Italy Hall. Proceeds will be use for safety improvements and the purchase of equipment and supplies throughout the Athletic Program. The School Committee on Thursday also heard about a proposed increase in lunch prices, but possible action was tabled until the next meeting.
Following approval by the Braintree School Committee of three bids on Thursday night, work will begin this summer renovating portions of Braintree High School, South Middle School and Liberty Elementary School. Bostonian Glass & Aluminum Company, Inc. also received a contract for incidental glass repairs throughout the system. The committee awarded Bello Painting Company, Inc. of Weymouth a $198,000 bid to clean, water-proof and paint the outside of Braintree High, as well as fix portions of the concrete exterior. The town budgeted $350,000 for the job and the school department will also pay Habeeb & Associates $30,000 for designer services.
