A Time to Give

'Adopt-a-Child' or Fill a Holiday Food Basket

For nearly 20 years, the Braintree Community Food Pantry has been feeding the hungry, and this season the need is especially great.

"Feed my Sheep." That is the motivating spirit behind the Braintree Community Food Pantry, a faith-based, all-volunteer organization, located within the First Baptist Church of Braintree at 594 Washington St. They began serving the community in 1993 and fed 720 people that year. This year, they are easily looking at 2,000 people. Qualified families receive a three-day supply of food each week, and all donations go to feed the hungry. Every Wednesday night, hot dinners are served at the pantry, and the doors are open to the community. About 75 people come each week. Director Agnes Lynch and her team of volunteers are now focused on the holiday season. "This year the need is great due to the economy," Lynch said. It hasn't been like this …

Home for the Holidays at Father Bill's Place

For the homeless families at Father Bill's & MainSpring, holidays are the toughest time of the year.

Since 1984, Father Bill's Place has been committed to ending homelessness. It started when Reverend William McCarthy -- aka Father Bill -- teamed up with Quincy-area clergy and community organizations to start the Quincy Interfaith Sheltering Coalition. In 2007, Father Bill's Place combined with the MainSpring Coalition of Brockton, and together as partners (FBMS), they hope to have a greater impact in the communities they serve. Director of Development Lucille Cassis described the "Home for the Holidays" programs for Father Bill's & MainSpring. The Thanksgiving Community Dinner at Christ Episcopal Church has been a local tradition for nearly 20 years. The church is located on Quincy Avenue in Quincy, and the dinner is from 12pm until 3pm…
