Mayor's New Salary Approved at $125,000

Proposals of $123,000, $130,000 and $118,000 did not move forward before the Braintree Town Council Tuesday night.

Starting next year, Braintree's mayor will have a salary of $125,000, a bump of $20,000 from the position's current pay that will last until the Town Council votes again in the future. The new salary was approved by the council Tuesday night and will land next on the desk of Mayor Joseph Sullivan. He has declined to discuss the issue in the past and was not in attendance during the meeting. Councilors debated the merits and parameters of a raise for seven months before deciding on the increase. The $125,000 figure, recommended by the Committee on Ways & Means, came from combining incremental raises based on the Consumer Price Index to the mayor's base pay through 2014 and adding several thousand dollars, Councilor Henry Joyce said. "That …

Mayor Salary Vote Delayed, Consensus Hard Fought

The vote on a potential increase of the Braintree mayor's salary has been moved to next month.

Even as the absence of one town councilor pushed the vote for an updated mayor's salary into February, some consensus emerged Tuesday night on how to compensate the position in the years ahead. A new proposal by Councilor Leland Dingee would put the mayor's salary at $123,225.18 starting next January. That is the high end of a professional management pay scale whose use Dingee says will help keep the politics out of salary raises and set a fair standard for future mayors. Newly-elected mayors would revert back to the beginning of the top grade of the management scale, or $105,333.32 (approximately what Mayor Joseph Sullivan earns now), under Dingee's proposal. They would then advance through the scale in increments up to $123,225.18 …

Councilors Recommend $125K Salary for Braintree Mayor

If approved by the full council, the raise would take effect next year.

Overriding the objections of their colleagues, who sought more deliberation before raising the mayor's salary for the first time in more than four years, councilors voted Wednesday night to increase the annual pay from $105,000 to $125,000. The new salary will take effect in January 2014 if approved by the full Town Council. Members of the Committee on Ways & Means came down 3-1-1 in favor of the pay bump, with Chair Paul "Dan" Clifford voting "present," saying that he disagreed with what he called the arbitrary number, but that he did not want to be an obstacle to a final agreement. "It wasn't based on a process," Clifford said. The proposal – first pitched last summer as an increase to $130,000 by Councilor John Mullaney – will go before…

Proposed $25K Raise for Braintree Mayor Sent Back for More Review

The Town Council on Tuesday night also continued until Sept. 4, 2012 a request to re-zone property at 7-11 Independence Ave. in Braintree.

The Braintree Town Council decided on Tuesday night to spend more time reviewing a possible salary increase for the mayor, including looking at options such as cost-of-living increases and performance bonuses in addition to a proposal for a one-time $25,000 boost. District 2 Councilor John Mullaney submitted an ordinance last month that would have changed the mayor's pay from its current $105,000 per year to $130,000, an increase that would have taken effect in 2014 following the next town election. But on Tuesday, following unfavorable recommendations by the committees on Ordinance & Rules and Ways & Means, the full council voted unanimously – with Mullaney himself making the motion – to send the proposal back to the Committee on …

Salary Hike for Braintree Mayor Voted Against in Committee, Town Council to Consider

The next Braintree Town Council meeting is Aug. 14 at Town Hall.

A proposal to increase the salary of Braintree's mayor by $25,000 failed to garner the support of a Town Council subcommittee on Tuesday night, with those arguing against the hike citing its size and ongoing economic uncertainty. District 2 Councilor John Mullaney submitted an ordinance last month that would change the mayor's pay from its current $105,000 per year to $130,000, an increase that would take effect in 2014 following the next town election. Mullaney, a member of the Committee on Ordinance & Rules, urged his fellow councilors on Tuesday to support the measure in order to alter "a salary that is not commensurate with the responsibilities [the mayor] carries." He pointed to like-sized communities such as Chelsea, Lexington, …

This discussion reminds me that the town should be hiring "flag men" like other states do. These flag men are trained and are paid less than police details and take their job seriously. 9 out of 10 times that I have seen a police detail in this town the cop is either on the phone or chit chatting with the Verizon or BELD employee! What a joke!!! If the town elimnated police details then we would …   more ›
