The lottery will be held on Jan. 23 at the Colbert School. Attendance is not required.
A full-day kindergarten lottery for the 2013-2014 school year will be held on Jan. 23 at the Colbert School for the three classrooms currently being offered at Braintree High School. Due to a lack of space within Braintree's elementary schools, Superintendent Dr. Kurzberg has said that the 60 spots at the high school are the only guaranteed full-day kindergarten seats next year. A fourth classroom there may become available, depending on interest, but would involve students eating lunch in their rooms or in the BHS cafeteria after older students are finished, Dr. Kurzberg said. The lottery will be at 11 a.m. All families will be notified the same day if their child has been chosen for the lottery. Principals and parents are not required to…

The School Committee plans to vote on a short-term fix for space needs by the end of January.
Schools officials say they are inclined to build 24 modular classrooms at the elementary level, a temporary solution for Braintree's space issues that could eliminate the possibility of re-districting and may prove more feasible than opening a kindergarten center. Superintendent Dr. Peter Kurzberg laid out several options to moderate class sizes and free up room for expected enrollment increases during the Monday night School Committee meeting. Each possibility has its drawbacks, but Dr. Kurzberg said he prefers the addition of four modular classes at each of Braintree's six elementary schools. Unlike re-opening the Monatiquot School, building the temporary space would rely mostly on capital expenditures and may be partially funded by the …

The Braintree School Committee on Monday night also heard from an outside auditor and from Liberty Principal Dr. Joyce Radiches on her approaching retirement. Look for more on that on Braintree Patch.
Full-day kindergarten offerings could be limited next year depending on an expected increase in Braintree Public Schools enrollment and the availability of classroom space at the elementary level. The kindergarten registration process kicks off next week with a letter to parents calling for information on how many children will join kindergarten in 2013-2014 and how many families are considering the full-day program. School Committee members approved the notice on Monday night. This year, full-day kindergarten is being held in three classrooms at the high school, and at Flaherty, Hollis and Morrison schools. The BHS classes, with a total of 60 students, will be available come September. But home school full-day kindergarten may not be …

An updated Braintree schools' concussion policy was also approved on Monday night.
The School Committee approved a plan on Monday night that will bring full-day kindergarten to three elementary schools next fall in addition to three at Braintree High School despite some pushback by members who argued the committee should spend more time exploring other options. By a 4-2 vote, with Mayor Joseph Sullivan not present and Shannon Hume and Pam Kiley dissenting, the committee signed off on a $324,000 program that will be self-sustaining through tuition. By a deadline earlier this month, the families of 163 students had submitted an application and $300 deposit. After matching up available space and requests – some wanted only BHS, or only their home schools – 119 students will be placed in full-day classrooms under the plan, …

School officials will determine any possible expansion of the full-day kindergarten program based on deposits submitted by last week's deadline and the lottery from earlier this year.
Braintree's full-day kindergarten saw a spike in interest this winter that has led school officials to examine a possible expansion for fall 2012 – an effort that is nearing completion after a deposit deadline hit last week. Currently, 60 students are enrolled in a pilot program at Braintree High School, which right now is the only full-day kindergarten space. But with the increased demand – 240 students entered a lottery this year, up from an initial 66 last winter – Superintendent Dr. Peter Kurzberg said that there is a "good likelihood" that in addition there will be some home schools programs next fall, despite the fact that deposits fell short of the 180 that he said previously would be necessary for full-day classes at all six …

School officials will determine any possible expansion of the full-day kindergarten program based on the number of deposits send in by Braintree families.
With less than three days remaining before the full-day kindergarten deadline, 112 deposits have been received from Braintree families, falling short so far of the 180 that the school department has said would be necessary to allow the program's expansion into all of the town's elementary schools. Superintendent Dr. Peter Kurzberg told the School Committee on Monday night that of those 112 deposits, 45 were designated by the families as only for the potential home school classes. Once the Thursday, March 1 deadline passes and the deposits are in, he added, the department will have a much better idea of whether the program will grow next year beyond the current three classrooms at Braintree High School. This year, nearly three-quarters of …

The Braintree School Committee on Monday night also approved a middle school program of studies and heard updates on various search committees. Check Braintree Patch for more on those stories.
The recent high demand for full-day kindergarten in Braintree has caused school officials to look into expanding the program. During the School Committee meeting on Monday night, Superintendent Dr. Peter Kurzberg offered an update on the program ahead of a Feb. 9 information night at East Middle School at 7 p.m. The school system also distributed the below FAQ about FDK. "It's very exciting to see the interest in full-day kindergarten," Flaherty Elementary Principal and FDK coordinator Mary Struzziero said on Monday. "It's quite a remarkable growth." Frequently Asked Questions – Full-Day Kindergarten Program 1. How many full-day kindergarten classes will there be? At a minimum, 3 at Braintree High School. At the most, 3 at Braintree High …

Following the lottery for full-day kindergarten held on Monday, there will be an information session for parents on Feb. 9 at East Middle School.
With nearly three-quarters of Braintree's incoming kindergarten families now having expressed interest in some form of full-day kindergarten, school officials are working to craft a plan that could open full-day classes at each of the town's six elementary schools. On Monday, Braintree schools held a full-day kindergarten lottery that will help determine which students get a slot in the current three-classroom pilot program at the high school. The lottery could also be used to decide which students potentially end up at their home schools, an expansion of the program that appears more likely now that 49 additional parents have joined the 191 who have said they would like their children in full-day kindergarten. Those extra parents, however…

There is a lottery today for Braintree's full-day kindergarten program that will help determine how the administration may proceed in fall 2012.
The families of nearly 200 incoming Braintree kindergarten students have said they would like to enroll their children in the full-day pilot program next fall, prompting school officials to examine whether it would be possible to open full-day kindergarten classes at each of the town's elementary schools, in addition to the three now operating at the high school. Today the administration is holding a lottery for the 60 spots currently available at Braintree High School. Parents are not required to attend and will be notified afterward, Superintendent Dr. Peter Kurzberg said. Of the 326 students that registered by the deadline earlier this month for kindergarten next September, 191 are on the list for the full-day program approved by the …

I wonder how many kids that go to schools in Braintree might live in another town. If its true then there would be no need for a lottery and all kids that really do live in Braintree can go to kindergarten for a full day.Someone should look into it.   more ›
