Covanta Energy Unveils Renovated Braintree Transfer Station

The transfer station renovations include odor, noise and other upgrades.

A nearly $7 million renovation project now complete at the Braintree Transfer Station includes a sound barrier, a revised truck pattern that also helps reduce noise, a re-located resident drop-off area and a state-of-the-art odor filtration system. "This will trigger redevelopment along this corridor," Mayor Joseph Sullivan said at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday with other local, state and federal officials and representatives from Covanta Energy, which operates the town-owned site on a long-term contract. "At the end of the day, this is about sustainable waste management," Covanta President and CEO Anthony Orlando said. Transfer Station Upgrades Move Along, Highlands Playground Gets Waiver

The transfer station on Ivory Street in Braintree is due for renovations to improve traffic flow, noise and odor, and the Highlands Playground can go ahead without a site plan review.

The Planning Board on Tuesday night voted to allow a multi-million dollar upgrade at the transfer station on Ivory Street to move closer to a final approval, and also agreed to waive an extensive review process for the long-anticipated Highlands Playground. SEMASS, the local body of Covanta Energy Corporation, announced plans last year to renovate its Braintree station, a hub for several other area towns, at a cost of between $4 million and $6 million. The plans include enclosing the area where trucks currently arrive to drop off waste, putting a new scale inside, along with the station where the vehicles' tops are cleaned of refuse, constructing a new maintance shed and moving the residential trash drop-off area to where recycling is now …
