Today's Drug and Alcohol Choices Have Lasting Impact, Former Celtic Tells BHS Students

Although Chris Herren was chosen 33rd in the draft, injury and substance abuse ended his NBA career after just two seasons with the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics.

Sports Illustrated selected Chris Herren for a feature on incoming Big East freshmen soon after he joined the Boston College basketball team, putting him on a trampoline in front of Fanueil Hall. "It was a big picture, complete with me in my maroon Boston College uniform, national exposure," Herren writes in his memoir, Basketball Junkie. "Everyone saw it, made a big deal out of it, and I could live off my laurels for a while longer." The Fall River native, an All-American who scored more than 2,000 points at Durfee High School, was riding high, and when his coach encouraged Herren to attend a drug and alcohol seminar, he reluctantly agreed, only because ditching would have meant a one-game suspension. Later, back at his dorm, Herren found…

Officials, Advocates, Recovering Addicts Talk Substance Abuse at Town Hall

Braintree hosted an event on Wednesday night that focused on efforts to limit substance abuse and educate young people about drugs and alcohol.

A portion of Wednesday's Substance Abuse Night at Braintree Town Hall was dedicated to showing videos of parents and students talking about the downfalls of drug and alcohol abuse and how to avoid them. The videos, produced by Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey and paid for with money seized from drug dealers, are available to schools and other organizations. Their message demonstrates a cornerstone of the work done over the past year and a half by Braintree's Community Partnership on Substance Abuse. "I believe we've taken some really good, positive steps," Mayor Joseph Sullivan said. Along with messages from Impact Quincy on this fall's medical marijuana ballot question and Norfolk County Sheriff Michael Bellotti on his …

Survey Shows Levels of Reported Alcohol, Drug Use Among Braintree Students

The survey was given to Braintree students in middle school and high school this past May with an opt-out for families.

The vast majority of Braintree students at the middle and high school levels have never tried some of the most dangerous drugs such as heroin, methamphetamine and oxycontin, though significant percentages have used marijuana and alcohol, according to a survey distributed at the end of the last school year. School Committee members digested the results at their meeting earlier this week with members of Braintree’s Community Partnership on Substance Abuse, which put together the document. It was distributed in May and reached 1,266 high school students (83 percent) and 1,214 middle school students (92 percent). "To get to the root of the problem [with substance abuse], we need to do data collection," Mayor Joseph Sullivan said. "This is a …

I'm so impressed that Braintree is taking action on this problem! As a Nurse Practitioner for homeless and marginalized individuals, opioid overdose was the number one cause if death in my patient population last year. And it's growing as a problem in our youth. Proud to be a Braintree resident!   more ›

Braintree Students Grades 6-12 to Take Substance Abuse Survey

The survey, to be given to Braintree students by the end of this school year, has an opt-out option for parents.

School officials say a new survey of middle and high school students in Braintree will help community leaders learn the extent of tobacco, alcohol and drug use among the town's young people and facilitate the creation of improved substance abuse prevention programs. The survey, created by local government, school, law and health officials, was approved unanimously by the School Committee on Monday night and will be given to students prior to when Braintree High School seniors finish this academic year. It will be the first time the Braintree Public Schools distributes such a wide-ranging questionnaire, Superintendent Dr. Peter Kurzberg said. The closest comparison have been surveys completed by ninth grade students in health class. …
