Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.
Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Braintree. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities. For a list of Braintree businesses that have partnered with the …

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 23, 2012.
The South Shore Plaza will open extra early this year for Black Friday, cracking its doors at 12:30 a.m. for the crowds of shoppers expected to line up starting on Thanksgiving. A spokeswoman for the Braintree mall confirmed the opening time, which is three and a half hours earlier than last year's. Store-by-store hours may vary for the Nov. 23 shopping holiday. Across town at Best Buy, doors will open at 1 a.m., according to the company's website. The License Board also approved items for TGI Friday's, Jared Jewelers and Quirk Automotive on Tuesday. Look on Braintree Patch for more on those stories.
The same force – economic distress – that put Braintree restaurateur Joseph Viola in the position of fighting for his alcohol license on Tuesday failed to convince officials that he deserved another chance. Viola and his attorney pleaded with the Board of License Commissioners for time to market and sell Viola Restaurante's all-alcohol license so that he could pay significant debts, but members declined to give Viola the opportunity, citing state law and his failure over the course of several months to cover a bounced check that was supposed to buy his annual renewal nearly a year ago. The board voted unanimously to cancel Viola's license, and therefore it did not take up the matter of the restaurant closing without notice earlier this …

The Dock Street Coffee Shop in Edgartown
You want to sit right behind Darren Patrick at the grill because what he’s doing with eggs and batter and toast and every kind of breakfast meat is surely as skilled as anything Nadia Comaneci ever performed on the tumbling mat. Your devoted correspondent is there on a November Sunday at 8 a.m. when one of the many morning rushes was taking place (the diner opens at 6:30). Darren has two salami-studded omelets spread out on the giant fry slab. They're the shape and size of deflated beach balls, and when he flips them once-twice-thrice into the classic burrito-bulked omelet, you realize that if only you could prepare something like that yourself at home, you’d be pestered with half-a-dozen proposals of marriage per week. To the left of …
