Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.
Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Braintree. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities. For a list of Braintree businesses that have partnered with the …

Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan's home rule petition for additional liquor licenses is aimed at spurring small business development.
Eight restaurant all-alcohol licenses, added to Braintree's stock for the purpose of boosting small business development in the Squares and the Landing, are now available to establishments with 75 seats or less. Earlier this month, Gov. Deval Patrick signed a home rule petition submitted by Mayor Joseph Sullivan to fight the high demand and corresponding high price of liquor licenses in Braintree. “These new licenses will allow us to place smaller restaurant venues throughout Town, particularly in our three Square areas," Sullivan said in a statement. “We envisioned the Landing improvements to be a stimulus for economic activity and these licenses will help us in that effort.” Sullivan's legislation originally allotted six licenses – two …

Saying it with flowers is a daily delight for Lynn Kurlansky.
Florists fulfill a specific role within a community; they are the ones that cater to the memorable moments in life, whether they are happy or sad. A florist is someone who works with nature every day, arranging beauty to showcase the diversity of the natural world. It is more than just putting some stems in a vase or standing by a traffic light with some faded roses in a bucket. Lynne Kurlansky has been a florist for many years, and although the majority of her work involves the attractive side of Mother Nature, she and her staff in her shop on Washington Street are always looking to bring as much creativity as possible to the art of floral design. This week, Patch took the opportunity to spend some time surrounded by bright colors, fresh …
