In honor of September 11th radio stations, newspapers, and television programs reflected on the events of 2001. On her way to school, a Fontbonne Academy senior, Maretta Morovitz, was listening to the Karson and Kennedy morning show on Mix 104.1. The radio hosts encouraged their listeners to recognize their local first responders in remembrance of September 11, 2001. Upon arriving at school, Maretta and four of her friends got together and discussed how they might do so. Within minutes, the students wrote an announcement to be read during homeroom period to all students, asking for a small donation at lunch. Braintree public safety personnel joined students at Hollis Elementary for the school's annual Sept. 11 lunch.
Every year since Sept. 11, 2001, Hollis Elementary School has hosted a lunch to honor Braintree's firefighters and more recently its police officers as well. So on Tuesday, following a ceremony at the fire department headquarters, public safety officials joined students in all grades at Hollis for lunch and conversation. The tradition, which extends beyond the lunch to other events such as a Thanksgiving Feast, began after Sept. 11 when the school developed a connection with a New York City firehouse. One of Hollis's teachers had a cousin who was a firefighter in New York, and when a group of Braintree firefighters covered a firehouse for the locals to attend a funeral for Sept. 11, it happened to be the same house, Principal Timothy …
Braintree officials, veterans, public safety personnel and residents remembered Sept. 11, 2001 with a ceremony on Tuesday.
Keynote speaker Rep. Mark Cusack, D-Braintree, urged those gathered on the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11 at the Braintree Fire Department to honor the public safety personnel who are always ready to sacrifice their lives. "Eleven years ago on a morning just like today, we were attacked by a faceless, cowardly enemy," Cusack said to a crowd gathered at the headquarters on Tuesday. Since then, Americans have returned to their daily lives, Cusack said, but in a "vastly changed world." "Let us not only remember those who perished that day, but also their families," Veterans' Agent Richard Walsh said. "They will never be the same." Town Clerk Joe Powers recalls the events of Sept. 11, 2001 and the special Congressional election held that day in Braintree.
Congressman Joe Moakley died of cancer in the spring of 2001, after serving South Boston for many years in the State House. On Sept. 11, 2001, communities in the 9th Congressional District held a special primary election for that seat, which was eventually claimed by Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch. Town Clerk Joe Powers, who was also town clerk on that tragic day, recalls the election and his Sept. 11 experience in this video interview.
