Sen. Keenan Reflects on Pride for City He Loves After Boston Marathon Bombing

"Heroic reactions. Quick responses. Prayers for those passed, and for those hurt..."

Sen. John F. Keenan, D-Quincy, posted the following reflection on the attack on the Boston Marathon late Wednesday night on Facebook: I have held back from speaking about it, or writing about it. But I haven’t been able to hold back from thinking about it. You see, I am not geographically from Boston, but I am of Boston. I live so close, and work in the heart of the great Shining City on a Hill. As a boy, one of my favorite things was to drive with my father, from Roxbury and South Boston, and my mother, from Roslindale, with my brothers and sisters through Boston, from the fish piers to Mission Hill. We’d see the guy with the peg leg down on the wharf, get slush in the North End, hear about the Brahmins of Beacon Hill, learn of where the …

Sen. Keenan's Priorities for This Session Include BELD Bill, Medical Marijuana Measures

The state senator said he remains focused on serving local communities and advancing public health.

State Senator John Keenan, who represents Braintree as well as the towns of Abington, Holbrook, Rockland and the City of Quincy, has laid out his priorities for the upcoming legislative session. Keenan will focus on local issues that affect South Shore communities, as well as broader issues of statewide policy. “Over the past several weeks my office has worked hard to write, review and submit legislation ahead of the bill filing deadline for the new legislative session,” said Keenan. “In that time I have heard from many constituents, and have spent a great deal of time meeting with local leaders, community groups, policy advocates, executive branch officials, and my fellow legislators, to help develop my priorities for the next year.” …

Medical Marijuana Prone to Abuse, Sen. Keenan Says

Legalizing medical marijuana in Massachusetts is one of the ballot questions this November.

The following is from the Office of Sen. Keenan: Sen. John F. Keenan (D-Quincy) has announced his opposition to a state ballot question that would legalize medical marijuana, based on concerns that its passage would lead to an increase in use not related to medical conditions, adding to the state's ongoing prescription drug abuse epidemic. “We are already seeing too many instances of legal drugs being excessively prescribed, then diverted and abused,” said Sen. Keenan, the co-chairman of the Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse. "Any pharmacological benefits gained through the addition of another addictive, in-demand drug to the local marketplace will be outweighed by the increased addiction and abuse that will undoubtedly …

Sen. Keenan on Welfare Reform, Health Care Costs, Home Foreclosures

Sen. John Keenan talks about the busy formal session that ended over the summer, including issues such as Melissa's bill, pension reform and human trafficking.

The following is from Sen. John Keenan, D-Quincy: Health care costs. Welfare fraud. Human trafficking. Pension reform. These are just some of the important issues addressed by the Legislature this session. As a freshman state senator, I believe the session that ended on July 31 was overall a productive one. Some issues grab more headlines than others. Our debates over casino legislation, for example, drew significantly more attention than the fact we sent a record amount of state aid back to our cities and towns, or that Massachusetts was just one of four states nationally to receive an improved bond rating. In addition, we eliminated parole for habitual violent offenders, addressed illegal foreclosures and auto repair rules, revamped …
