How Can We Make Every Day Earth Day? (Sponsored)

Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism. Sponsored by Sony.

Very few events are celebrated around the globe, but Earth Day is. This year, it’s come and gone. But we’re here to ask: What can we do to show our love of the earth on that day, and every day? On May 31st, Sony will release After Earth, an action-packed movie that takes place 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity to leave. It’s the kind of scenario that makes you want to donate to Greenpeace, recycle everything, and start biking every where, immediately. So, in honor of Earth Day, Patch has teamed up with Sony to present these ideas for making every day Earth Day. How can we make every day Earth Day? Begin with little things. Easy things. Obvious things. Things we take for granted each day, and use and/or abuse because …

Quincy Leaving Trash Alliance Has No Financial Impact on Braintree, Mayor Says

Braintree and Weymouth could look into another partner for waste management or look at a new service provider.

Quincy's decision to sign on with a different waste management company to save money does not mean any significant changes for Braintree residents, Mayor Joseph Sullivan said. "I respect and appreciate Mayor [Thomas] Koch's mind set," Sullivan said in an interview Wednesday, following the news that Quincy had signed a 10-year lease with Boston-based Sunrise Scavender Inc. The move saves Quincy several million dollars and means five new hybrid collection trucks for the city, according to the Boston Globe. Braintree and Weymouth will continue what Sullivan said has been a successful parternship over the past five years. Both communities have a one-year option with their current provider Capitol Waste that they could exercise this July. …

How to Have a Waste-Free Holiday in Braintree

While your thinking of others this holiday season, make sure you're also keeping the planet in mind.

Before you buy another roll of gift wrap and leave those holiday lights on all night, the city's Department of Environmental Affairs is asking you to have a waste-free holiday this year.  According to the Newton Environmental Affairs website, the holiday season is the most wasteful time of the year. You can prevent this, though, with home made gifts, energy-conscious Christmas lights and alternative ways to wrap presents. Below is the full Waste-Free Holiday Guide from the Department of Environmental Affiars: Give gifts that not only last a long time, but help reduce packaging waste. The gift within a gift – instead of wrapping paper, use tea towels to wrap cups or silverware, a pair of gloves for rings or bracelets, a bath towel for oils …

Trash Talk: Renewal by June 30 Provides Variety of Town Services

Remember to ask for your Braintree ’Trash Sticker’ when paying this years’ trash bill.

The following is from Recycling Coordinator Jeffrey Kunz: The trash bills were sent out this month for a renewal date of June 30. Paying the trash bill provides access to several town services: SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING can be dropped off (with or without a sticker) by residents and small business. Cleanouts and construction material (small quantities of fence & decking, loose carpet, excess trash, etc.) can be taken to the SEMASS Weigh Station (same location as the trucks to the right of the Drop-Off (cost is $.10/lb and payment must be by credit card). Summer hours of operation for both facilities are: Mon-Sat, 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. Remember, a new, valid (2012/2013) Trash Sticker is required at all times, in both facilities, to drop-off trash. …

Thanks for the followup Joseph. Frankly I find it ludicrous that the town would be supplying some neighborhoods but not others. Instead of giving them to select neighborhoods, they should have made them available to all for short money. Seems a lot like the 100 Road program where your roads get fixed as long as you live in the right neighborhood. (Have they broken ground on a single road this …   more ›

Trash Talk: Keep an Eye on Your Trash Barrel Weight

Braintree Recycling Coordinator Jeffrey Kunz dishes on waste.

More and more residents are using larger toters with lids and wheels in lieu of the traditional trash barrel. While they are certainly easier to use and less likely to blow away on windy days, they are much heavier than traditional barrels.  With his in mind, please remember that the weight limit for a full barrel (which includes the barrel weight) is 50 pounds.   We recommend you use plastic bags for the trash you put into these toters thus allowing the person emptying them to grab bags to reduce the load before he tips the toter into the truck, therefore making sure all the trash is disposed of.  Your cooperation will help insure fewer, on-the-job injuries and keep our streets cleaner.   For question call 781-794-8088. –Jeffrey Kunz
