Out of three finalists, Mayor Joseph Sullivan selected Braintree Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins to lead the department following the retirement of Paul Frazier.
Dozens of police officers from around Massachusetts joined local and state officials and Braintree residents on Wednesday at Town Hall to watch Russell Jenkins being sworn in as the town's newest police chief. Mayor Joseph Sullivan read the oath of office to Jenkins, calling it an "historic occasion." Since 1909, when the first chief was appointed without pay, Braintree has had eight chiefs, Sullivan said, making Jenkins the ninth. "It's a different job today than it was even five years ago," Sullivan said, adding that there is more emphasis on services and community involvement. Votes by the Town Council on Tuesday night gave Braintree both a new Police Chief and an Assistant Town Clerk. Former Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins was appointed to Chief by Mayor Joseph Sullivan last week and received unanimous approval by the council. He will be sworn-in Wednesday at 5 p.m. during a ceremony at Town Hall. Mayor Joseph C. Sullivan has announced that Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins will be sworn in as Braintree’s 9th Chief of Police during a ceremony to be held at 5 p.m. in the Cahill Auditorium of Braintree’ Town Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Deputy Chief Jenkins was appointed Chief by Sullivan on October 10th. He is a 29-year veteran of the Braintree Police Department having served the last eight years as Deputy Chief. From 1987 until 2004 he served as a Lieutenant, first in the Patrol Bureau until 1997 when he moved to the Detective Bureau. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University and has a certificate in Public Safety Leadership and Management from Suffolk University. Mayor Joseph Sullivan announced his appointment of Russell Jenkins as police chief on Wednesday afternoon, saying that Jenkins' years serving Braintree and his passion for the community will benefit the town and its residents. "Russ shares with me the belief that we have a good department that can get better, and we are united in our focus to bring the Braintree Police Department to an even higher level of performance," Sullivan said during a press conference at Town Hall. I have all of the respect for Chief Jenkins, but is anyone questioning why in the world would a town promote someone to Chief who in all likelyhood will be retiring soon himself. Would have liked to seen someone younger but good for Jenkins!   more ›
