As part of a cost savings plan, the MBTA plans to stop weekend service on commuter lines including the Greenbush and Old Colony through Braintree.
Arguing that the MBTA's plan to cut weekend commuter rail trips to save money is "contrary to the mission of the Greenbush and Old Colony Rail line's restoration," Braintree town councilors lent their signatures this week to a proclamation against the service reduction. "It really is a step backward," said Councilor Sean Powers, who prepared the resolution and read it aloud during the council's May 15 meeting. Powers lists a series of reasons why weekend service should not be eliminated, including: Mayor Joseph Sullivan and Weymouth Mayor Susan Kay also sent a letter last month to the MassDOT Board of Directors urging them to consider at least a minimum level of weekend service.
