Threat of Winter Storm on Tuesday Postpones MCAS Testing

Due to the expected winter storm on Tuesday, the state announced that the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25.

Since much of Massachusetts is expecting a winter storm on Tuesday, and with it the possibility of numerous school closings or delayed openings, the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced on its website.  Originally this composition test was scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, but in an effort to make sure all schools administer the test on the same day, "all schools must administer the ELA Composition test to students in grades 4, 7, and 10 on Monday, March 25, including schools that are not affected by the weather," according to a memo from Elizabeth Davis, Associate Commissioner of …

Braintree Beats State MCAS Average in All Grades, Categories

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education released statewide 2012 MCAS scores on Wednesday.

Braintree students in all grades tested significantly better in English, math and science than the state MCAS averages this year, even as results released on Wednesday show that Massachusetts 10th graders performed at their highest level yet. Statewide, 10th grade students hit the proficient or advanced levels 88 percent of the time in English and 78 percent in math. That compares to 38 percent and 24 percent in 1998 when MCAS was first administered. "I am proud of the progress we have made, but won't be satisfied until we close the achievement gap and all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential," Gov. Deval Patrick said in a press release on Monday. Locally, 96 percent of 10th graders at Braintree High School scored …

Governor Visits Braintree's East Middle School, Where MCAS Success Abounds

Liberty and Flaherty Elementary schools in Braintree were also commended by the state for narrowing the proficiency gap in MCAS scores.

Two assistants floated around the room, helping the kids, some with autism or other disabilities. They played math BINGO, answering the problems to fill in boxes. But that one student, cramped in his small desk, wearing a suit and looking to the young girl behind him for answers, continued to defy the expectations of another student, a boy who had cracked wise earlier. "Who's going to win?" Walsh had asked the classroom, filled along the edges with people lugging notebooks and cameras. "Me. Me. Me," the …
