As Braintree Renews Liquor Licenses, Officials Encourage Safe Drinking Practices

The license board renewed the town's various alcohol licenses Tuesday.

In the midst of both the holiday and annual alcohol license renewal seasons, Braintree officials Tuesday sought to spread a message of responsible drinking to residents and business owners. The Board of License Commissioners voted unanimously, with Fire Chief Kevin Murphy absent, to approve one-year renewals for every business and organization holding an alcohol license in Braintree, contingent on any necessary paperwork or payments being made to the town. Three license holders still owe taxes, Licensing Coordinator Annette McLaughlin said. As of Tuesday's renewal process, 30 restaurants, one hotel and six clubs held all-alcohol licenses, six establishments held wine & malt common victualler licenses, six held all-alcohol package goods …

Eight More Liquor Licenses Available Now in Braintree

Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan's home rule petition for additional liquor licenses is aimed at spurring small business development.

Eight restaurant all-alcohol licenses, added to Braintree's stock for the purpose of boosting small business development in the Squares and the Landing, are now available to establishments with 75 seats or less. Earlier this month, Gov. Deval Patrick signed a home rule petition submitted by Mayor Joseph Sullivan to fight the high demand and corresponding high price of liquor licenses in Braintree. “These new licenses will allow us to place smaller restaurant venues throughout Town, particularly in our three Square areas," Sullivan said in a statement. “We envisioned the Landing improvements to be a stimulus for economic activity and these licenses will help us in that effort.” Sullivan's legislation originally allotted six licenses – two …

At the risk of being allied with Carrie Nation, I am skeptical of the plan to rescue our local economy by issuing additional liquor licenses. While I admire and support people who have an entrepreneurial spirit, is there a need to balance the quest by the Town to support small businesses with the cultural environment?   more ›

Request for Extra Liquor Licenses Changes Significantly

Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan's home rule petition for additional liquor licenses to spur small business development is before the Senate with alterations.

A bill before the state legislature that would give Braintree more liquor licenses was recently modified so that it no longer targets the permits to the Squares and Weymouth Landing and instead caps the size of eligible restaurants. Local officials say that the change, though not what was first envisioned by Mayor Joseph Sullivan, will not get in the way of the goal of spurring small business development. But the addition of two licenses to the initial proposal concerns some independent restaurant owners, who argue that Braintree already has a glut of chains and that the extras will dilute the value of their licenses. Sullivan's home rule petition originally allotted six licenses – two for each area targeted for development – with a goal …

With Annual Renewals, a Breakdown of Braintree's Liquor Licenses

The license board renewed all but one liquor license in Braintree on Tuesday afternoon.

The Board of License Commissioners on Tuesday afternoon renewed by unanimous vote all of the town's various types of alcohol licenses held by businesses in Braintree, except for Joe's American Bar & Grill, which was tabled until later this month because the company owes the town $117 in back taxes or fees. Many of the establishments were lacking proper signage about alcohol responsibility, as required by local and state law, and will be receiving letters from the licensing coordinator. Other issues, as presented to the board by police officer Jack Twohig, included discrepancies in amusement device amounts and problems with fights and over-intoxication. If an establishment has had a potential liquor law violation in the past year but has …
