Morelli Family Launches Foundation to Support Transplant Patients

John Morelli of Braintree and his wife Stacey started a nonprofit after receiving support from the community following John's double transplant surgery.

Last March, John Morelli underwent double transplant surgery, receiving a heart and liver during an 18-hour procedure at Massachusetts General Hospital. Preparing for the surgery and then recovering – re-learning to eat, stand, walk and even write again – meant weeks in the hospital. It meant that his wife Stacey and sons Griffin, Tyler and Joshua spent many hours and days away from their home in East Braintree, and when they were home, everyday routines like baseball practice and making dinner became a challenge. Fortunately, support from the community poured in. Morelli Family, Embraced by Braintree Community, Giving Back After Father's Surgery

John and Stacey Morelli, who live in Braintree, are creating a foundation to help other transplant families after John was given a new heart and liver earlier this year.

By the time John Morelli had been at Massachusetts General Hospital for several weeks this winter, waiting for a transplant of both his heart and liver, the Braintree native had put the upcoming surgery in the back of his mind, concentrating instead on who was visiting each day and whether the weather was mild enough for a walk outside. Then on Friday, March 23, around midday, Morelli was lying in bed, not watching TV, just waiting to get up and sit outside in the sun for a half hour. Dr. Kimberly Parks, a cardiologist leading a team of medical professionals assigned to Morelli's case, walked into his room.
