How to get moving and motivated after Labor Day Weekend.
The morning after a holiday weekend is never fun. I’m tired, bloated and not exactly looking forward to crawling out of bed. Not that I ever wake up and pump my fist with anticipation of the week ahead, but this past Tuesday was the worst. And I’ve got no one to blame but myself. Well me and the abundance of food I splurged on. Surely, some of you out there can relate? What is it about a holiday weekend that leaves us so drained and positively un-motivated to eat well and exercise? Aside from the excess food, alcohol and lack of sleep that throws our blood sugar waaaaaay out of whack, our motivation seems to fall by the wayside too. Say hello to lethargy, cravings and the couch. So, what are some quick and easy ways to get back on track …

How to get back on track with your health goals after any big feast
Baked fruit cobbler swimming in vanilla ice cream. Potatoes mashed with obscene amounts of butter and cream. Sticky glazed sliced ham. These were the highlights of my Easter. I ate so much that I actually had to change from jeans to stretchy yoga pants midway through my gluttonous feast. Oh, and by the way, did I mention that I’m a Nutrition Coach? Shouldn’t I know better? Of course. But part of living a healthy lifestyle is splurging once in awhile. And in real life, there is no such thing as perfection; we all fall off course on occasion. What matters most is how quickly we get back on! The following tips and tricks always help to bring me “back” to my normal routine after a splurge. They might just help you too. It’s all about the “…

It's not another diet book... promise.
Dear readers, I’ve received quite a bit of mail from you recently asking how you can take the nutrition and fitness information I share in my articles and actually make it all work for you. We think alike. I have been searching for a way to rope in all of the nutrition and fitness tidbits you need to know and hand them to you in a nice, convenient package because I get it; everyone needs a plan, a blueprint if you will, to help make sense of it all. There’s a lot to take in; like how to set realistic goals and actually stick to them, how to create balanced meals whether you’re cooking at home, at work, on the go or out to eat, how often you should eat (frequently!), how to make sure your workouts are really working for you and how to get…

A revealing follow up to "Why Diets Don't Work."
If you’ve read my article last week on the perils of dieting, you were probably nodding your head, thinking, “That’s me!” In fact, a lot of readers wrote to me and said that they have been struggling to achieve their goals for years (some their entire lives) and now they know why. I hope you’ve learned that failing isn’t always due to a lack of willpower and that just because we’ve been taught to follow age-old advice like “just eat less," doesn’t mean it’s right. And if you missed me last week ranting about my frustrations with the “D” word, check it out here. It’s an insightful lead into today’s article. So, the big question is, amidst all of the fad diets and baseless nutrition advice permeating our everyday lives, how exactly …

Learn how cutting calories, counting points and shunning bread will only work against you.
I’ve been a Nutrition Coach for close to nine years. My clients are hard-working moms, traveling CEOs, athletes, baby boomers, teenagers, and everyone in between. With each new client, I begin with an in-depth nutrition consultation. And though my clients may differ in age, gender, health, lifestyle and goals, within the first five minutes of meeting them, they all say the same thing: “I know what to do. I’m just not doing it.” And every time I hear a client say this, I silently think to myself, “You don’t know what to do. And it’s not your fault." After all, how can the average person know what to do when the majority of health professionals don’t? The truth is, even some of the most respected and well-educated dieticians, doctors …

How to eat well at a local favorite.
Every so often I get a frantic phone call from a nutrition client wanting to know what to eat while on their way to a restaurant. Seeing how The Cheesecake Factory is so popular (what's not to love about a restaurant with a menu the size of the local phone book?) and conveniently located at the South Shore Plaza, it's one of the places I get asked about the most. I've decided to share a few of the healthier highlights on the Cheesecake Factory menu, along with tips on how to make special requests to lighten your meal without sacrificing flavor. Though I have not personally evaluated or tasted every meal described below, my education in culinary arts and nutrition has allowed me to become fairly skilled at scanning a menu and spotting …
