Braintree Fontbonne Student a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist

Fontbonne Academy is a Catholic all-girls high school located in Milton, MA. It is a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston.

Fontbonne Academy Seniors Maretta Morovitz, Caroline Cabral, and Jessica Baker have been named Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Of the top 50,000 of more than 1.5 million students who took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test  (PSAT) in October 2011 and entered the National Merit Scholarship Program, 34,000 are recognized as Commended Students (the other 16,000, or approximately 1%, are named Semi-finalists).  Fontbonne Academy Senior Julia Butts has been named a Semi-finalist and will have the opportunity to continue in the competition. Fontbonne Academy Senior is a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist

Fontbonne Academy is a private school for young women in grades nine through 12.

Fontbonne Academy senior, Julia Butts of Braintree, has been named a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program and will have the opportunity to continue in the National Merit Scholarship competition. More than 1.5 million juniors took the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) in October 2011 and entered the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Based on their performance on that test, less than 1% (about 16,000) are named semifinalists.  It is an honor for any school to have a Semifinalist given the small number that are chosen from a very competitive field.    “We are so proud of Julia and her academic success,” said Head of School, Mary Ellen Barnes, “this is quite an accomplishment.” –Fontbonne Academy

Fontbonne Students Recognize First Responders

Students at Fontbonne Academy, which serves Braintree, Milton and other towns, honored first responders in honor of Sept. 11.

In honor of September 11th radio stations, newspapers, and television programs reflected on the events of 2001.  On her way to school, a Fontbonne Academy senior, Maretta Morovitz, was listening to the Karson and Kennedy morning show on Mix 104.1.  The radio hosts encouraged their listeners to recognize their local first responders in remembrance of September 11, 2001.  Upon arriving at school, Maretta and four of her friends got together and discussed how they might do so.  Within minutes, the students wrote an announcement to be read during homeroom period to all students, asking for a small donation at lunch.  The Fontbonne Academy seniors thought a pizza lunch was the perfect way to express their gratitude to the brave men and women …

Fontbonne Academy Graduates Challenged to be Courageous by Braintree Speaker

Seventy-two members of the Fontbonne Academy Class of 2012 participated in the 55th Commencement Ceremony on Thursday evening.

At Fontbonne Academy’s 55th Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, May 24, the 72 graduates were prompted to be courageous by a member of the Class of 1962 and challenged by their classmates to make an impact on the world. Braintree resident Joan Garrity, Ed.D., R.N., carried on the Fontbonne Academy tradition, which began in 2008, of the graduation speaker being part of the 50th Anniversary Class. Garrity, who graduated from Boston College of Nursing in 1966, went on to earn Masters of Education from Northeastern University and a Doctorate from Boston University. Fontbonne Academy 2012 Graduation Includes Braintree Speaker

Fontbonne Academy will host its graduation on Thursday, May 24, at 6 p.m. on the Fontbonne lawn. The traditional white tent is already up, and students and families have a busy week, including the Baccalaureate Mass and awards evening on Tuesday, May 22, and Class Day and luncheon at Lantana’s with the Learning Community on Wednesday, May 23.  The graduation itself will begin with a procession of the Class of 2012, followed by honored guests and 50th reunion alumnae, the Class of 1962.    Honors Speakers, who must have a 3.5 GPA or above and submit a portfolio to a committee for rigorous selection, will address their graduating class. Braintree Students at Fontbonne Academy Receive Mass Maritime Award

Fontbonne Academy is a Catholic all-girls high school located in Milton, MA. It is a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston.

Fontbonne Academy juniors Julia Butts of Braintree and Eliza McDonald of Quincy were recently awarded the JWL (Junior Women Leaders) in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) award from Massachusetts Maritime Academy.  After being nominated by a Fontbonne guidance counselor, the students submitted an application including a resume, essay, transcript, and recommendations.  On Thursday, May 10, Julia and Eliza attended an awards ceremony at Massachusetts Maritime Academy with their parents. There, they met with cadets, toured the campus and enjoyed dinner including a keynote speech from a current professor at the college.  At the dinner, Eliza McDonald was recognized as one of the top three applicants among the pool of STEM awardees and …

Fontbonne Academy Braintree Students Make Honor Roll, Foreign Honor Societies

Congratulations to the following Braintree residents who earned spots on Fontbonne Academy’s Third Quarter Honor Roll: Head of School List Julia Butts ‘13 First Honors Kylie Noonan ‘13 Honorable Mention Abigail Plouffe ‘14 *****     *****     ***** Additionally, on April 4, the annual induction of French and Spanish Honor Societies was held in the Fontbonne Convent Chapel.  Many prayers were said in multiple languages during the service.  Students received pins and roses honoring their accomplishments.  All were invited to the foyer for a light reception to celebrate after the service.  Braintree students Abigail Plouffe ’10, Yutong Xue ’12, Yunon Xue ‘12 was inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society that day.  –Fontbonne Academy

Fontbonne Academy Showing Beauty and the Beast This Month

Fontbonne Academy’s Good Fountain Players will present the Disney classic, "Beauty and The Beast," in March. Tickets to all performances are $10 each and can be purchased at the door on the evening of the show. Fontbonne Academy is located at 930 Brook Road in Milton. Showtimes are: March 16, 17, and 23 at 7 p.m. March 18 at 2 p.m. March 24 at 4 p.m. Join Fontbonne for a "Characters Tea" on Sunday, March 18, before the matinee from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.  Tickets are $15 for the tea party and show and include preferred seating. Fontbonne Academy Invites Braintree Alums to 13th Annual Evening of Stars Gala

Fontbonne Academy is a private school for young women in grades nine through 12. The institution is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston and was founded on a Catholic, Western intellectual and spiritual tradition.

Fontbonne Academy, a Catholic high school for young women located in Milton, will be holding its gala fundraiser, the 13th Annual Evening of Stars, on Saturday, March 31, at 5:30 p.m. at Lombardo’s in Randolph. Tickets are $100 per person and include dinner, auctions, raffles and live music. There are currently 207 Fontbonne students and alums living in Braintree. At this year’s Evening of Stars event, Fontbonne will highlight the school’s celebrated social justice program and will present its prestigious Stellar Award to those who have made significant contributions to social justice efforts both within Fontbonne Academy and beyond her walls. Braintree Fontbonne Student Among Boston Globe Scholastic Art Award Winners

Fontbonne Academy is a private school for young women in grades nine through 12. The institution is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston and was founded on a Catholic, Western intellectual and spiritual tradition.

Congratulations to six Fontbonne art students whose work was honored in the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Contest.  There were 14,000 entries in the contest this year. Gold Key Awards were given to Fontbonne students Maura Healy ’12 of Quincy of in painting, Julia Himmel ’11 of Quincy in photography, and Dabota Wilcox ’12 of Randolph in painting.  Silver Key Awards were given to Julia Himmel ’11 in photography and Yutong Xue ’12 of Braintree in painting.  Honorable Mentions went to Haejung Mun ’12  of Weymouth for painting, and Yutong Xue ’12 for jewelry.  The Awards Ceremonies for this year's Gold and Silver Key winners will be held Sunday, March 11 at the John Hancock Hall in Boston.
