Joan, who lived and died in the 15th century, came from a small farming family and never learned to read or write, according to the the Catholic Encyclopedia. She eventually led the French army to victories and claimed she had visions from God of reclaiming England. This led to her being burned at the stake at age 19 after being captured and sold to the English. She is now a Patron Saint of France. 1.
