Year-end campaign finance reports were filed by Braintree candidates in late January and were posted online after that.
Nearly $125,000 remains in the campaign accounts of candidates for Mayor, Town Council and School Committee following Braintree's election last fall, with the vast majority of the leftover money sitting in Mayor Joseph Sullivan's hefty committee fund. An additional $16,300 was raised between the first campaign finance deadline two weeks before the Nov. 8 election and the end of 2011 by the 21 candidates for those offices with reports on the Town Clerk's website. Altogether they raised almost $130,000 last year and spent $108,000. End-of-year reports were due on Jan. 20. More than $43,500 was spent during the end-of-year period, much of it coming from funds already raised by the committees, in the form of election night parties, printing …

Lisa Heger, a Braintree resident for 20 years, has volunteered extensively within the Braintree school system.
Ever since Lisa Heger's daughter Lindsey entered Braintree Public Schools at Morrison Elementary 13 years ago, Heger has been volunteering nonstop for different schools and programs. In a campaign announcement, Heger ticked off more than a dozen organizations she has supported over the years, including the East Middle School council, Town Meeting and the Braintree Fund for Education. Heger was co-president of the Morrison PTO for four years and also served on the school system's long-range planning committee. "Whenever an opportunity arose for my participation in the partnership that exists between Braintree Public Schools and the families that it serves, I jumped at the chance," Heger said. "I saw a need and I move to fill it." Lindsey …

Jason Tait, spokesman for the state Office of Campaign & Political Finance, taught a seminar on campaign finance rules at Braintree Town Hall on Tuesday night.
Every four years, when U.S. presidential candidates build enormous stockpiles of wealth, public attention turns to campaign finance. The spotlight also centers on election money when Congress or the Supreme Court makes a significant change, like the court did in January 2010, effectively allowing corporations the same free speech, and donation, rights as individuals. But much of the time, the complex set of laws that shapes how candidates of all levels can solicit and receive money largely goes unnoticed. "I know campaign finance kind of elicits a groan," Jason Tait, a spokesman for the state Office of Campaign & Political Finance, said on Tuesday night at Town Hall, kicking off a detailed seminar attended by about a dozen candidates from …

Tom Devin, who grew up in Braintree and is now raising two children in town, is seeking a seat on the committee that oversees the school department.
Tom Devin, a lifelong Braintree resident and father of two, is running for the School Committee this fall as a way to help bridge concerns between parents and the school department. "Braintree has enjoyed a reputation for having one of the best school systems on the south shore,” Devin said in a statement. “When young couples are shopping for a community in which to live, they choose Braintree because of its exemplary schools. I understand the importance of maintaining the high standards set by our school system to ensure that our kids are among the most well-prepared for college and beyond.” His campaign will focus on parental involvement in the schools, something that Devin said he has experience with as both a parents and student in the…

The District 5 race for Braintree Town Council appears to be heating up, with one candidate dropping out to support another against the incumbent.
Philip Baldassini, a Braintree resident who ran for Town Council once before, dropped his bid this year for District 5 and has pledged his support to another candidate in the hopes of unseating incumbent Ronald DeNapoli. Baldassini said in an interview this week that he will support Marybeth Canwell, a barber and mother of three who is seeking the seat after a successful push with a number of other residents earlier this year to create a full-day kindergarten program. "I strongly feel that we need somebody different," Baldassini said. Baldassini ran unsuccessfully for the seat in 2009, having been prompted to enter town government after seeing problems with how National Grid coordinated with town road construction. Many of those issues …
