Less Than 50 Braintree Homes Without Power, Crews Working to Clear Roads But Parking Ban Extended

No decision has been made yet on closing Braintree schools Monday.

The storm that has battered Braintree and the region with high winds and piles of snow is the worst Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan has seen since he took office. "The DPW is working incredibly hard, but a storm of this magnitude, as you try to stay in front of it, there are always challenges," Sullivan said early Saturday afternoon. Widespread power outages hit Braintree last night, and each section of town has at least some homes still without electricity, but less than 50 overall, Sullivan said. The mayor pointed to an incident on Cleveland Avenue as an example of BELD's quick work. Program Encourages Braintree to Keep Islands Beautiful

The town's Adopt an Island program began in the 1990s as a Thayer Academy students' term project.

Every year, some two dozen or more local businesses, organizations and families select traffic islands throughout Braintree, spending their time and resources to plant flowers, pick up trash and generally maintain their small plots of land. The Adopt an Island program has gone through some revisions during the 15 or so years its been in place, but one constant has been the care and management of the Gardners Guild of Braintree, and in particular member and past president Kerri MacKenzie Eck. This year the program has fleshed out a transition from coordinating with longtime recreation department director Bill Hedlund to working with the Department of Public Works.
