MIAA Volunteers Help Fix Up Braintree Athletic Facilities, Play Ball With Challenger Kids

Participants in Braintree's Challenger Division played softball with volunteers from the New England Student Leadership Conference earlier this month.

Earlier this month, student athletes from Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association joined with those from other New England states to take part in the 2012 New England Student Leadership Conference at Stonehill College in Easton. Some of those student athletes also made their way over to Braintree to complete various service projects, including landscaping at Alumni Stadium, construction of field hockey goals and the painting of an athletic complex, Athletic Director Michael Denise said. Afterward, they met up with ball players from Braintree's Challenger Division for a softball game at BHS. Sign-Up Starts for 2012 Challenger Baseball Program

Think Spring! Think Baseball! Registration for the Braintree-based program for children with disabilities is now open.

Registration for the 2012 season of Challenger Baseball is now underway. This noncompetitive program enables boys and girls with physical and cognitive challenges to enjoy the game of baseball while gaining the social benefits of team participation. All children ages 5 – 18 are eligible to play, regardless of their abilities or place or residence. Now in its 9th year, Braintree American Little League hosts the program where every player plays the whole game, gets up to bat each inning, gets on base, and eventually crosses home plate. Batters can use the tee or have a coach pitch. He/she can also be assisted by a volunteer Buddy to hold/swing the bat and move around the bases. There are no ‘outs’ and no official ‘score’.
