Braintree Residents Donate $3,000 More to Romney Than Obama

The FEC database breaks down presidential, congressional and other campaign donations by state and city.

Leading up to the latest Sept. 30 election finance reporting deadline, Braintree residents donated hundreds of dollars to the campaign of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, especially in small amounts of $50, $25 and even $10. Overall, Braintree residents have donated $21,333 this election cycle to Romney. Since the last filing deadline at the end of June, those living in 02184 gave $9,436. Residents donated more to Romney than Obama, who has taken in $18,600, with less individual donations – 67 to 231 for the incumbent. Among the most prolific donors were businessman John Flatley ($2,500), Certified Financial Planner Paul E. Hess ($2,500) and businessman Richard Valentine ($2,500). $18,600 Goes From Braintree Residents to Obama Campaign

The FEC database breaks down presidential, congressional and other campaign donations by state and city.

Leading up to the latest Sept. 30 election finance reporting deadline, Braintree residents donated thousands of dollars to the campaign of President Barack Obama, especially in small amounts of $15, $35 and even $8. Overall, Braintree residents have donated $18,608 this election cycle to Obama. Since the last filing deadline at the end of June, those living in 02184 gave $10,390. Among the most prolific donors are local author James D. Livingston ($2,500) and UMass professor Sharon Penney Livingston ($1,700). Others include teachers, retired folks, an MIT lab staff member, a Boston Globe sales rep, a self-employed writer, Comcast employee and restauranteur. Scott Brown Dominates Elizabeth Warren in Campaign Donations From Braintree Residents

The FEC database breaks down presidential, congressional and other campaign donations by state and city.

As of the end of June, Braintree residents had donated a total of $1,349 to the campaign of Democrat Elizabeth Warren, compared to her Republican opponent, incumbent Sen. Scott Brown, who has received $24,350 from local donors, according to an analysis of the Federal Elections Commission database. The candidates' most recent campaign finance reports showed that Brown had $15.5 million cash on hand and Warren had $13.5 million, according to the Boston Globe. Brown's haul of $24,350 from Braintree residents is more than the combined donations to the Warren, Romney and Obama campaigns, as of June 30, 2012, by some $2,000. Rep. Cusack and Braintree Mayoral Aide Fined for Campaign Finance Violation

Cusack, a first-term representative from Braintree, said in May that he mistakenly listed Braintree employee Christopher Griffin as his campaign treasurer after Griffin was hired by the town.

Rep. Mark Cusack, D-Braintree, and mayoral aide Christopher Griffin have paid fines to the state after Cusack admitted last spring that he inappropriately listed Griffin as his campaign treasurer when he was a public employee. The payment agreements were disclosed in letters from Michael J. Sullivan, director of the Office of Campaign & Political Finance, to Cusack and Griffin that were made public this week. Cusack, through his campaign committee, paid $750, and Griffin paid $200.  Cusack said in an interview in May that he discovered the mistake while preparing for this year's race and immediately notified the OCPF. Braintree Candidates Learn Ropes of Campaign Finance

Jason Tait, spokesman for the state Office of Campaign & Political Finance, taught a seminar on campaign finance rules at Braintree Town Hall on Tuesday night.

Every four years, when U.S. presidential candidates build enormous stockpiles of wealth, public attention turns to campaign finance. The spotlight also centers on election money when Congress or the Supreme Court makes a significant change, like the court did in January 2010, effectively allowing corporations the same free speech, and donation, rights as individuals. But much of the time, the complex set of laws that shapes how candidates of all levels can solicit and receive money largely goes unnoticed.
