'Underdog Team' Wins Braintree 6th Grade Basketball Championship

Send your sports info to joseph.markman@patch.com.

The "Underdog Team" won the Braintree 6th Grade Basketball Championship. Coach Brandon Seaman's Team went into the playoffs with 2 wins and 7 losses and no one expected them to win; but with great perseverance, amazing team play by everyone and a "never give up" attitude, this team won it all!!   Everyone truly contributed with great energy, setting picks for each other, stealing the ball and great passes. With all that said, Calvin Paiva was the team leader in the championship game. He scored more than half of the points to help lead the team to a 37-27 victory. It was Coach Brandon Seaman's Team (all names listed in last picture attached) v. Coach Joe Vanelli's Team. –Joanne Burke-Sherman

School Addressing Students' Rowdy Behavior Surrounding Braintree Playoff Game

The BHS girls basketball team fell to Central Catholic Monday night at TD Garden.

Braintree High School administrators and teachers are speaking with students Tuesday after a number of students traveling to and from the state semi-finals game against Central Catholic acted out on the train Monday night. Headmaster James Lee said that students will be talked to in a large group Tuesday afternoon and that letters will go home to parents. "There was misbehavior and we’re addressing that," he said. Lee said that a lot of the students taking the Red and Green lines to TD Garden to watch the Braintree girls basketball team play "did not handle themselves appropriately." In a letter to Lee that was forwarded to Braintree Patch, Boston resident Pamela R. Chang said she witnessed "a remarkable show of bad behavior, rudeness, and…

Braintree High Loses State Semi-Finals to Central Catholic

Braintree fell to Central Catholic Monday night at the TD Garden in a nailbiter.

The Braintree High School girls varsity basketball team was stopped in its tracks Monday night by a strong and methodical performance by Central Catholic, a Lowell-based prep school that now heads to the Division 1 finals in Worcester this weekend. It came down to the closing seconds as the Lady Wamps pulled within two points after being down as much as 11 at the start of the fourth quarter. After a very close first quarter, Braintree slipped behind but stayed within striking distance throughout the second and third quarters. The final score was 55-51. Braintree nearly came back at the end of the fourth, going on a run before Central Catholic closed the game out with strong last-minute defense and spot-on foul shooting. A scoring break-…
