Sports updates for Braintree teams and athletes.
The following is from Athletic Director Michael Denise: Members of the Boys Tennis Team that participated in the MIAA Division 1 South Sectional Individual Tournament included: Farris Muntasser (Jr) – Farris won his first match Saturday easily 6-2, 6-0 and lost in the second round Sunday to the # 3 seed in the tournament. Richard Baker (Jr) played well while being defeated in the first round. Luan Pham (Sr) and Matt Proulx (Jr) “advanced” to the round of 16 next week. Braintree Youth Lacrosse has 350 local girls and boys participating.
Boston College men's lacrosse team coach Kevin Orcutt and several of his players joined boys from Braintree Youth Lacrosse Wednesday evening to teach them drills and plays at Braintree High School. Orcutt, a former Quincy High coach, is also the director of Hawks Lacrosse, an independent development program that provides individual and small group instruction on all things lacrosse on the South Shore. He has helped lead the nationally-ranked Eagles to an undefeated record so far this season. Approximately 220 boys and 130 girls participate this year in Braintree High School lacrosse. Members of the Braintree High Show Choir and winter sports teams received accolades Tuesday night.
Dozens of Braintree High School athletes, coaches and family members packed the Town Hall auditorium Tuesday night to receive citations from the Town Council. The evening began with a somber moment of silence for members of the armed forces and the victims and responders of the Boston Marathon bombing before turning jubilant as the high school show choir performed the "Star Spangled Banner" and a rousing spiritual that earlier this year earned them high marks at a regional music festival. For the first time, nine current AWHS student-athletes presented the inductees to a crowd of more than 200.
Eight outstanding former student athletes were inducted into the Archbishop Williams High School Athletic Hall of Fame during a ceremony held March 24 at The Lantana in Randolph. “Our inductees represent the very best that AWHS had to offer and their season and career accomplishments have stood the test of time,” Dennis M. Duggan Jr., Esq, AWHS President said in a press release. “They were leaders, role models, captains, and league all-stars, and their feats were recognized by our local and area newspapers. Rachael Brazil and Lauren Connelly played for the girls team in the first annual Shriners High School Girls All-Star Ice Hockey Game on Saturday and came up on the short end of a 4-2 score. Troy Tenaglia's team went on to win its game 9-2.

The first ever Shriners High School Girls All-Star Ice Hockey Game will be held on March 30 at 1:45 p.m. at the DCU in Worcester. Braintree will be represented by Lauren Connelly and Rachael Brazil in the Girls game. Then Troy Tenaglia in the Boys game. Lets get lots of Blue & White out to Worcester. The 7th Grade Girls Travel Basketball Team won the Old Colony Basketball Championship by defeating Weymouth March 17th. The girls are coached by jim Rust and Vin Barry.

USA Gymnastics may write rules for the sport in Massachusetts for next year. The lack of rules was a main reason the MIAA said it would not sanction the sport.
After a meeting earlier this month was cancelled because of weather, Braintree High School Boys Gymnastics Coach Richard Ellis said his visit to the MIAA Board of Directors has now been rescheduled. Ellis said in an email that he will speak to the board about its decision to drop the sport during its Wednesday, May 1 meeting at 11 a.m. The BHS coach is among many supporters, including Braintree Athletic Director Michael Denise, who have been working to reinstate boys gymnastics as a championship sport for next year.
