Councilor John Mullaney has again proposed that Braintree adopt the local option meals tax.
Partway into his second term, Mayor Joseph Sullivan has signalled an openness to the Braintree meals tax not seen in years past. While still undecided, Sullivan said that the local option – bringing the tax at Braintree restaurants from 6.25 percent to 7 percent – is worth exploring as a way to gird the town against diminishing and unstable federal and state revenue sources. "I've not put my shoulder behind this in the past," Sullivan said in a recent interview, during which he laid out a case for the tax. The Committee on Ordinance & Rules will take up the proposed salary increase for Braintree's mayor again in February.
Town councilors will look at data such as the salaries of mayors and administrators in towns with similar operating budgets as they move toward a possible raise for Braintree's mayor. The salary of the mayor has remained at $105,000 since Braintree changed its form of government five years ago, and is now lower than what a significant portion of the town's department heads, school principals and other officials earn annually. Earlier this year, Councilor John Mullaney proposed a $25,000 salary increase for the mayor. His ordinance was sent back to the Committee on Ordinance & Rules in August for more study. Tyler, I don't always agree with you, but you are 100 % spot on with this one. The Mayor did say during the last election that he could not, and would not, ear mark the funds for any one line item (including the school system) should the meals tax be implemented.
