Braintree High Student Earns West Point Award Linked to General Thayer

The West Point Society of New England encompasses several states, but makes a special effort to connect with the Town of Braintree.

General Sylvanus Thayer is the namesake for several of Braintree’s iconic institutions and a prominent name in the town’s history. He also left his mark on history as the “father” of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Earlier this week an award was presented to a Braintree High School junior that honors this link between Braintree and one of the nation’s best-known leadership institutions. James Mahoney, of the Wamps’ Class of 2014, received the Sylvanus Thayer Leadership Award at the school’s awards ceremony on Tuesday night. Presented annually by the West Point Society of New England, the award recognizes a Braintree High School student who has demonstrated leadership traits and encourages them to continue their “pursuit of …

Another Bomb Threat at Braintree High Deemed Not Credible

Last month, bomb threats found at the high school forced its evacuation.

For the third time in a little more than a month, Braintree High School administrators found a bomb threat in the school. The latest, like the others, was ultimately deemed not credible. But unlike when two notes were found in two separate locations April 25, the school day continued as normal Thursday after the threat was cleared. "This morning, in a 3rd floor bathroom of the building, writing was discovered that implied a bombing of the school," Headmaster James Lee wrote to parents in an electronic message Thursday morning.  "With the police, school staff scanned the building for suspicious devices or anything that might substantiate the threat. There was nothing found. As before, at no time has this threat been viewed as credible." Lee…

Newsweek Top-Rated School List Leaves Off Braintree High

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

Newsweek has ranked the high schools nationally, but the criteria they used leaves Braintree High School off of their list. The school did not rank in the top 500 nationally by US News, nor in the Massachusetts list. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about the ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students …

MIAA Board Votes to Revisit Dropping Boys Gymnastics

A lack of rules by the national gymnastics body was a main reason the MIAA said it would not sanction the sport next season.

The state body in charge of sanctioning high school sports voted Wednesday to revisit its earlier decision to drop boys gymnastics from its official roster next season. Richard Ellis, coach of the Braintree High School boys gymnastics team, one of only seven in Massachusetts, and Braintree Athletic Director Michael Denise, presented evidence in support of the sport to the MIAA Executive Board. In an email, Ellis said both "gave compelling reasons to secure the recognition in the Commonwealth." The board will reconvene June 12 for a final decision. A lack of activity – the sport has lost dozens of participating schools in recent decades – and a decision by the National Federation of State High School Associations not to write rules for next…

Braintree High will host the Murphy Insurance Group's Distractology 101 tour next week.

A 36-foot-long, neon-yellow mobile classroom will set up outside Braintree High School next week, outfitted with high-tech driving simulators designed to give new drivers the chance to experience the perils of distracted driving, including texting while driving.
