There have been and are some exciting things going on at the Braintree Community Youth Center (aka “Youth Center” and BCYC) this Fall and Winter. First up, our 2nd Annual Halloween Dance on was held in October. Over 50 kids attended, which was great considering all of the Halloween events taking place the same night around town. Second, Arts & Crafts (A&C) has been taking place once a month, usually on the 3rd Saturday. This Fall, the A&C projects were a big hit. You can see our Halloween Craft project on our Facebook page. We will be posting some of our past A&C projects on our Facebook page over the winter. Be sure to check it out. In December we had 3 fun events. First up was an Ice Cream Party. Then we had a Cupcake Decorating Contest…

America's Promise Alliance along with ING picked Braintree as one of the best communities for youth.
Last spring, when Braintree officials were putting together an application for a contest featuring the best places in the nation for young people, Sarah Murphy was asked to write a testimonial. "In Braintree, the bar is set high by teachers, but they help us get there," Murphy said. "They make teaching not only their job, but their life." Murphy, a freshman and Braintree's Project 351 Ambassador, spoke on Friday at Braintree High School as part of an event to commemorate the selection of the town by America’s Promise Alliance’s as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People. She was joined by John Londergan, a student in Braintree High's alternative program. Londergan said that at the start of high school he was completely unmotivated…

The auction and dinner to support the Braintree Community Youth Center is from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27.
Participants in the live and silent auctions being held on Friday to support the Braintree Community Youth Center could win a South African Safari, a ride to school from the Braintree Police Department, a flat screen TV and even a meet and greet with Republican Senator Scott Brown. A year ago, in response to the possibility the center may have had to shut its doors, members of the community got together and held a dinner and fundraiser at Emerald Hall that raised more than $30,000. That and a California Pizza Kitchen event that raised another $4,000 sent the BCYC on its way to surer financial footing. This Friday, Jan. 27, the youth center will host its second annual "winter cookout," also at Emerald Hall, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tom and …

Last year at this time, the Braintree Community Youth Center was on the verge of closing. We were asking for your help to keep us open. You came through big time by donating to and attending our Cookout in January Fundraiser Auction. Since then, new members have joined the Board of Directors, including but not limited to Andrew Curtis and myself. In addition, the Board has put together a 5-Year Strategic Plan thanks in part to your input at our Strategic Planning Meeting in April. Tom and Janice Weitbrecht have helped us with both the Fundraiser Auction and the April Planning Meeting. They have offered to manage again our Cookout in January Fundraiser Auction taking place on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 at Emerald Hall on Bay State Drive. We hope…
