PHOTOS: BHS Cheerleaders, Girls Basketball and Hockey Seniors

Braintree sports photos from recent senior nights and a cheerleading tournament.

The Braintree High School cheerleaders, at a tournament Saturday at Bristol Plymouth Regional Tech, took first place by default when the competition didn't show. Last Wednesday night was the last game the seniors on the BHS girls varsity basketball team would play at BHS. There was a special ceremony held to honor the seniors who will graduate this year. They beat Needham 53-33 that night. The boys ice hockey team held its senior night last Tuesday and beat St. Peter-Marian 8-2.

Braintree High Boys Hockey Defeats Milton 4-1

After making a run for the state championship eight months ago the Milton High School Wildcats returned to the ice on December 15, 2012 against the Braintree Wamps at the Ulin Rink. The game was well attended by students and parents on both sides.  As you walked into the rink you were met by Steve Wilkie, the Wildcats Team Manager, who looked great and was ready for another successful year. Also, seen in the large crowd were two of last years scoring machines, Terry Walsh and Paul Curran who were there to cheer on their former teammates.  After losing 13 seniors to graduation last year, the Wildcats were ready for another season led by senior captain’s Brendan Kelley, Pat Coffey and Pat Miller all seasoned players from the championship …

Success of Winter Athletes Recognized by Braintree Town Council

The council also discussed a National Grid petition to do gas line work on Quincy Avenue, part of which was tabled to allow more discussion with town officials.

Braintree High School student athletes were awarded citations by the Town Council on Tuesday night at Town Hall for their success during the 2011-2012 winter season. "You gave us a really exciting season and a lot of fun," Council President Charles Kokoros said. Added Councilor-at-Large Sean Powers, "It's a show of strength and a testament to our town." Individual athletes in girls and boys wrestling and gymnastics took to the auditorium for the ceremony, as well as the girls and boys ice hockey teams. School Committee Chair Shannon Hume, member Tom Devin and Superintendent Dr. Peter Kurzberg were also on hand for the honors. Wamps Boys Hockey Finishes Regular Season, Trouncing Brockton 9-1

Braintree High athletes were honored before the game on Thursday, Feb. 23 for Senior Night.

The Braintree High School boys varsity hockey team finished its regular season last Thursday by beating Brockton in a route of 9-1. This year’s team completed an impressive season with a record of 12-6-3. They had a run of eight straight wins during the season that included wins against Weymouth, Natick, Needham and Wellesley. The Wamps hockey program will say goodbye to four seniors this year who have represented Braintree High proudly for the past four years. They were honored at Senior Night before the game against Brockton High School. Wamps Wipe Out Walpole in Millbury Cup Hockey Tournament

The Braintree boys hockey team won 6-1 on Wednesday night in Walpole.

Braintree High School goalie Dan Murphy looked sharp in net as he stopped 12 of the 13 shots the Walpole players fired at him (eight of them coming in the 1st period) during the Wamps' 6-1 victory in the Millbury Cup on Wednesday night. Yet Murphy nearly had the night off compared to the Walpole goalie, who stopped 32 of the 38 shots the Braintree Wamps pelted at him. The Wamps came out onto the ice and never let up for three periods. After the first period of play, there was no score. The teams played very evenly with each of the goalies coming up with key saves, keeping the puck out of the net. With nine left in the second period, the Wamps drew first blood as Cody Kingston open the scoring. Walpole tied the score at one about 35 seconds…
