Braintree Remembers Fallen Soldiers, Honors their Sacrifices for Country

Lieutenant Colonial Frank K. Sobchak, a Special Forces Officer, was the keynote speak at Braintree's 2012 Memorial Day Ceremony on Sunday.

Those who serve the United States as part of its military and who have sacrificed their lives in its cause are America's "greatest asset," Lieutenant Colonel Frank Sobchak told those gathered on Sunday for Braintree's Memorial Day observance ceremony. "Members of the Armed forces have been and still are the under-represented one percent – the men and women who can pass stringent medical, physical, and moral standards that allow them to join the select club whose biggest benefit is that it allows them to risk their lives for others," Sobchak said in his keynote speech at Blue Hill Cemetery. "One must wonder out loud how many potential presidents, captains of industry, and public servants are among the fallen," he continued. "Yet the …

Second Vote by Council on Blue Hill Cemetery Land also Unanimous in Favor

The vote designates 28 acres on the south side of the cemetery's West Street complex as cemetery land so the owners might be able to build a crematory.

The Town Council on Tuesday night took another vote on the dedication of land on the south side of West Street for cemetery use after officials determined the previous week's action did not adhere to Massachusetts Open Meeting Law. Its favorable decision increases the likelihood that Blue Hill Cemetery will be able to build a crematory near where they currently have administrative offices. The unanimous approval, with councilor Henry Joyce absent, came one week after members voted similarly on the proposal, a "same night action" that caused one Braintree resident to complain to the council that it was acting outside the law. Afterward, Town Council President Charles Kokoros scheduled a special meeting to redo the cemetery vote and revisit …

Town Council to Redo Items at Special Meeting Jan. 24, Including Cemetery Vote

The new meeting this coming Tuesday follows concern that the Jan. 17 Braintree Town Council meeting may not have entirely followed Open Meeting Law.

Prompted by criticism from a Braintree resident during the Town Council's last meeting and the possibility that a vote to dedicate land for cemetery use on West Street may not have adhered to the state's Open Meeting Law, president Charles Kokoros has scheduled a special session of the council on Jan. 24. "As the new president I want to make sure we meet the requirements of Open Meeting Law," Kokoros said in an interview on Friday. "From this point forward, there will be a higher level of awareness of everything on the agenda. We will try to be more descriptive and make sure this doesn’t happen." Councilors voted unanimously last Tuesday to allow Blue Hill Cemetery to use land on the south side of West Street for a planned crematory, …
