BELD Having Trouble with Verizon Emails

The Braintree Electric Light Department serves all of the town with electricity and also offers various TV, phone and Internet services.

From the Braintree Electric Light Department: If you are a Verizon Internet customer, we need your help in resolving a technical problem affecting your email. Verizon is blocking BELD Broadband server smtp1.beld.net (IP 24.233.95.156). As a result, hundreds of Verizon customers are not getting email from hundreds of BELD Broadband subscribers. If you are a Verizon customer, you may not be receiving legitimate personal email. We have tried to use Verizon's online portal for unblocking the server and we've spent considerable time on the phone attempting to resolve this issue. Verizon representatives finally informed us that they will NOT address the issue unless they hear directly from these customers. We only handle email for our domain …

A Post-Blizzard Message from the Braintree Electric Light Department

BELD said all of its nearly 16,000 customers experienced outages as some point during the Blizzard of 2013.

Below is a letter from the GM of the Braintree Electric Light Department on the Blizzard of 2013: The Blizzard of 2013 was an historic storm that will most certainly be talked about for years to come. The combination of heavy snow and wind gusts over 65 mph brought down trees and power lines in Braintree, leaving many homes without heat and electricity. As you know, Braintree Electric Light Department (BELD) staff and crews worked diligently throughout the storm, doing everything within our abilities to restore power and limit the number of affected customers within our community. All 15,895 BELD customers experienced an outage during the storm. For 43 percent of them, the outage lasted only 13 seconds. A large group of the other 57 …

Street Clearing Ongoing in Braintree After Beastly Blizzard

The current plan is to open Braintree schools on Tuesday.

While the main streets and many of the side roads in Braintree were cleared of snow by Monday morning, the town is continuing to target smaller roads and push snow away from intersections to clear sight lines. "There's a lot of work remaining to be done," Chief of Staff and Operations Peter Morin said Monday morning. Front loaders and other heavy equipment ranged throughout the town Monday moving snow into giant piles and heaving large amounts into dump trucks to be taken to the landfill for melting. Plow drivers from the DPW and contractors hired by the town worked from Friday afternoon straight through 11 p.m. Saturday night, Morin said. Officials then brought in heavier equipment to assist with removing snow. Truck maintenance issues …

I am disappointed with the response of the Town of Braintree! The side roads were and are still poorly plowed. The most concerning was the state of the sidewalks and the school areas. The alternative bus route which would have required children to wait on the corners of main roads, with snowbanks taller than them, in the street! The Highland's School sidewalks were not cleared, the snowbanks were…   more ›

Less Than 50 Braintree Homes Without Power, Crews Working to Clear Roads But Parking Ban Extended

No decision has been made yet on closing Braintree schools Monday.

The storm that has battered Braintree and the region with high winds and piles of snow is the worst Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan has seen since he took office. "The DPW is working incredibly hard, but a storm of this magnitude, as you try to stay in front of it, there are always challenges," Sullivan said early Saturday afternoon. Widespread power outages hit Braintree last night, and each section of town has at least some homes still without electricity, but less than 50 overall, Sullivan said. The mayor pointed to an incident on Cleveland Avenue as an example of BELD's quick work. A tree limb downed a power line there last night at about 6:30 p.m. and BELD was on the scene within 30 minutes despite the quickly falling snow. "Overall I…

Power Restored After Wednesday Morning Outage

Much of South Braintree lost power for about 30 minutes Wednesday morning.

A mechanical failure at one of Braintree's substations caused a widespread power outage early Wednesday on one of the coldest days of the winter. The Braintree Electric Light Department restored power after it had been off for approximately 30 minutes throughout South Braintree and as far west and north as Braintree High School. "Power was restored very quickly," Mayor Joseph Sullivan said. "These types of situations are going to happen, and the question becomes how quickly can you remedy a situation." Sullivan said he and other town officials were getting ready for their day around 7 a.m. when their cell phones began ringing, alerting them to the outage. There was no discussion to send students home from school, the mayor said, but that …

BELD Restores Power to 1,000 Braintree Customers Affected By Sandy

Keep tuned to Braintree Patch for more Hurricane Sandy updates.

Some 1,000 customers of the Braintree Electric Light Department lost power throughout the day on Monday, but all outages were restored by 10 p.m. last night. During the peak of Hurricane Sandy, 350 BELD customers lost power at the same time, GM William Bottiggi said in an email on Tuesday morning. Workers began at 5 a.m. Monday repairing affected power lines. "We didn’t have any issues with our Broadband service," Bottiggi said. "Today we dispatched some of our linemen to Middleboro and Reading to provide mutual aide to those Towns at their request." The most significant repair problem involved a broken pole on Middle Street. For more updates on the storm, check in with Braintree Patch today and also go to our Hurricane Info Center.

BELD Planning to Celebrate Power Week 2012

For more than 119 years BELD has been a nonprofit public power utility owned and operated by the citizens of Braintree.

Braintree Electric Light Department (BELD) will celebrate national Public Power Week with a tent at the Braintree Farmers Market on September 29 and a Senior Breakfast on October 1. This annual celebration is observed by more than 2,000 electric utilities that collectively provide electricity on a not-for-profit basis to 43 million Americans. Look for the tent BELD donated to Sustainable Braintree, and join us at the Farmers Market between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 29. To promote the viability of solar energy, BELD has been powering a water cooler with a solar powered generator during Farmers Market hours. The generator was purchased with some of the money realized from the sale of solar renewable energy certificates (SRECs…
