On this day in 1868, Andrew Johnson became the first U.S. president impeached by the House of Representatives. Johnson took over after Abraham Lincoln's assassination in 1865 and quickly ran afoul of Republicans in Congress who opposed his lenient Reconstruction policy, which allowed many ex-Confederates to receive amnesty. 1. On Feb. 15, 1933, an Italian immigrant named Giuseppe Zangara shot and killed Chicago mayor Anton Cermak, who was standing at the time next to Franklin Delano Roosevelt during a speech in Miami. Some speculate that Roosevelt was actually the target, though Zangara's bullets hit five different people.
