Founded on the principles of General Sylvanus Thayer, father of West Point, Thayer Academy began in 1877 with just 30 students. The opening was soon followed by the addition of laboratories and a sports complex. One hundred years later, the middle school was added and the school's current scale and focus took shape. Thayer is coed and has nearly 700 students on its 34-acre campus on Washington Street near Town Hall, the fire department headquarters and Thayer Public Library. There are 107 faculty members. The current headmaster is W. Theodore Koskores. Sports include football, cross country, field hockey, soccer, basketball and ice hockey.
