Kyleigh's Cure Road Race Raises Money for Rare Disease Research

Kristine and Sean Lydon's daughter Kyleigh has a rare disease that requires more study and funding, so they have worked tirelessly to raise money with help from those in Braintree and nearby communities.

Registration remains open for the 3rd Annual Kyleigh's Cure Road Race this Sunday, June 9 at 9:30 a.m.

Eight-year-old Kyleigh Lydon, whose parents Sean and Kristine are Braintree police officers, was diagnosed as an infant with a rare disease called Galactosemia, which does not allow the 6-year-old to break down a simple sugar called galactose.

Accumulation of galactose is poisonous to the body and causes serious complications such as liver failure, kidney failure, and brain damage. There is currently no cure or treatment for Galactosemia.

When the Lydon family learned about Kyleigh's disease, they also found out that little was being done to discover a cure or treatment because of its rarity.

They have gone on to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for galactosemia research. Proceeds from Sunday's race will go toward finding a cure.
