Habitat for Humanity Walk Builds Awareness About Need for Affordable Housing

South Shore Habitat for Humanity is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to delivering simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with families in need.

On a typical Saturday morning in April, Sunset Lake would be visited by some swans, seagulls, and a few pre-season sun worshippers.

Nevertheless, Saturday, April 27 was the perfect backdrop for the South Shore Habitat for Humanity Braintree Community Walk.  Several volunteers joined Sandra Libby, Chairman of the Braintree Area Local Partnership Committee (LPC), and Kathryn Prioli, Community Relations Manager for Habitat, to setup signs, banners, registration, and water stops.

The main event, a 3-mile walk through some of the main streets and back roads of Braintree, was attended by local individuals and families, as well as, some participants from neighboring communities.  Mayor Sullivan took time from his busy schedule, before the walk began, to stop by and wish the walkers well.

As the walkers strolled through town, volunteer photographer, Abby Sullivan, captured many moments to remember, including a group photo of the walkers as they visited the first water stop on Pearl Street where homeowners, John and Peggy Ford, (South Shore Habitat’s 2nd home) greeted the walkers and provide bottled water to the participants as they continued their route through the neighborhood.

Crossing the finish line back at the lake, walkers were welcomed by Danny McCarthy of Escape Plan, who provided entertainment as the walkers feasted on lunches donated by Pizzeria Uno’s of Braintree.

South Shore Habitat for Humanity’s Braintree Area Local Partnership Committee is actively searching for land in the town of Braintree and the surrounding area in an effort to provide a homeownership opportunity for a local family in need of a simple, decent, affordable place to call home.

“We look forward to a continued partnership with the Town of Braintree as we work together to bring our fifth unit of affordable housing to Braintree,” said Executive Director, Martine Taylor.

The LPC meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 7pm in Braintree.  For more information about how you can get involved, please email the Braintree Area LPC at BraintreeLPC@sshabitat.org or call South Shore Habitat’s Community Relations Manager, Kathryn Prioli at 781-337-7744, ext. 10.
