Braintree Firefighters Send $16,000 Check to Sandy Hook School Support Fund

With the help of Braintree business Signs and Prints, local firefighters sold hundreds of stickers to raise money for the victims of the Newtown shooting.

A fundraising effort launched by Braintree firefighters last December following the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School was more successful than anyone imagined.

The Braintree Firefighters Local 920 raised $16,000 selling green stickers to local residents and people from across the country. Two different stickers were emblazoned with the date of the tragedy, 12/14/12, and the with six stars for the teachers and 20 for the children who died.

"We were shocked," Firefighter Brian Connors said.

Firefighter Robbie Loud came up with the fundraising idea while watching the tragedy unfold and thinking about his own young children.

"People were looking for a way to help and we offered them an avenue to do that," Connors said.

When the effort showed up on the local news one night, donations began pouring in. The firefighters sold $1,000 to $1,500 per day for a couple weeks, Connors said. They would order a few hundred stickers and they'd be gone the next day.

The stickers were made by Larry Chan of SignsAndPrints.com. Chan said he drew up the design on his computer and pitched in his time and ink. His materials manufacturer donated supplies as well.

“I just couldn’t fathom that people would do this for such a great cause so fast and so quick," Loud told CBS News. "It was just overwhelming."
