Braintree Gives Babe Ruth Team Big Send-off to Regionals

The Braintree 15-year-old Babe Ruth team is headed to Newtown, CT for the regional tournament.

Braintree residents and groups raised more than $6,000 to help send the 15-year-old Babe Ruth team to Newtown, CT for a regional tournament.

The players, coaches and supporters stopped by Town Hall Friday morning for a going-away breakfast hosted by Mayor Joseph Sullivan and attended by several town councilors before driving to Connecticut.

The team won the Eastern Massachusetts State Championship Sunday and will face New Hampshire Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The tournament, running through Aug. 10, will be aired on ESPN 2, but the finalized list of games that will be shown has not been released yet.

The tournament is double elimination. The team and coaches will stay in Connecticut as long as they keep playing.

Depending on how they fair Saturday morning, Braintree will play either Central Maine or Pittsfield, representing Western Massachusetts, in the second round.

Alex Kesaris, whose Braintree Brew House raised $1,000 for the team Wednesday night, promised to hold a party on the team's return, whether they win or lose.
