NY Times Science and Math Story Focuses on Braintree

The outdoor classroom at Ross Elementary was among the initiatives highlighted by the newspaper.

To demonstrate how well students in Massachusetts are doing when it comes to math and science achievement, the New York Times turned to Braintree.

The national newspaper, in its Education Issue published Sept. 2, highlighted the outdoor classroom at Ross Elementary School, tagged along with seventh graders working on a science project at South Middle School, visited a special needs math teacher at East Middle School, and interviewed Science Director Dr. Dianne Rees and Math Director Dr. William Kendall.



"The MCAS has helped Braintree figure out what works and what doesn’t. Middle school students were struggling with chemistry questions on the eighth-grade MCAS. The district changed the order of instruction, covering concrete science concepts in sixth grade and moving some chemistry topics to seventh. 'And it worked,' Dr. Rees said. 'They’re doing better on their chemistry.'" reporter Kenneth Chang wrote.
