Gardener's Guild Donates Books to Braintree Schools

All grade levels in the Braintree Public Schools received books last week from the Gardener's Guild of Braintree.

For the 23rd consecutive year, the group gave the district books related to its interests in environmental protection and preservation. The guild selected 15 different titles and donated a total of 62 books.

Lucille Barton, GGB founder and retired Braintree schoolteacher, along with Catherine Avellino, Ross School teacher and fellow guild member, chose the books. Guild member Judy Caristi attached bookplate labels to each of the 62 books donated.

Guild President Donna Banville made the formal presentation Superintendent Maureen Murray at Hollis School on Sept. 19, the Guild said in a statement. Hollis Principal Tim McDonald, as well as Sandra Young and Ann Moore, GGB Publicity, attended the presentation along with a group of students.

The schools received the following books:

Elementary schools: The Grasshopper’s Song by Nikki Giovanni and Chris Raschka; The Song of Celestine by James Redfield and Dee Lillegard; My Kingdom For a Horse edited by Betty Ann Schwartz; The Native Americans: Indigenous People of North America by Contributing Authors; A Story A Story by Gail E. Haley; When the Frost Is on the Punkin by James Whitcomb Riley; The Rainbow Bridge by Audrey Wood; The Life and Work of Frederic Remington by Ernestine Giesecke; and The Seasons Sewn:  A Year in Patchwork by Ann Whitford Paul.

Middle schools: Growing Up Wild by Thorsten Milse and Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard & Nantucket: The Geologic Story by Robert N. Oldale.

High school: Secrets of the Ice by Veronika Meduna; Climate Change: Picturing the Science by Gavin Schmidt and Joshua Wolfe; In Season, A Natural History of the New England Year by Nona Bell Estrin and Charles W. Johnson; and Robert Frost’s New England by Betsy and Tom Melvin.
