'Courage to Remember' Holocaust Exhibit Returns to Braintree High

On Wednesday, April 3, 2013, Braintree High School will host a series of speakers.

Braintree High School is hosting its sixth annual “The Courage to Remember” exhibit from March 28 through April 4, 2013, to commemorate the fallen and survivors of the Jewish Holocaust.

Grade 10 students will have the opportunity to examine a series of panels from a traveling exhibit of sixteen panels from the Simon Wiesenthal Center commemorating the Holocaust, which will be on display in the Braintree High School Media Center from March 28 to April 4, 2013. The exhibit will be open to
the public on Wednesday, April 3, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is an international human rights organization dedicated to educating how to confront anti-Semitism, hate and terrorism, promoting human rights and dignity, and teaching the lessons of the Holocaust for future generations. The exhibit is also part of our anti-bullying campaign; it is an opportunity for students to reflect, think, and discuss about hate, bullying, and the role of bystander and the implications and consequences of being indifferent and doing nothing when witnessing acts of bullying and hate toward others.

The program, The Courage to Remember, is on loan to Braintree through the generosities of Dr.and Mrs. Max Perlitsh of Winchester, Massachusetts and Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts. To assist teachers with the treatment of the content, the social studies department has developed a content and resource guide. The guide will identify the posters in the display, as well as list of suggested resources and activities that teachers can incorporate in their classes.

On Wednesday, April 3, 2013, Braintree High School will host a series of speakers, including Dr. Samuel Bernstein, a professor in the Department of English at Northeastern University, Holocaust child survivor Mr. Jack Trompetter, and Dr. Frederick Manasse, a local artist. Each speaker will speak to students about the lessons learned from the Holocaust, and how the role of “Bystander” only perpetuates conflict. This engagement will be the culminating event for our commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Week and the poster display from the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
