Braintree Teacher's Union Contract Approved

Police and fire personnel have yet to reach agreement on contracts.

Members of the School Committee voted this week to approve a contract between the town and its largest union, the Braintree Education Association.

The committee voted 6-0 Monday night with member Sarah Nichols absent to approve a 6 percent raise for teachers, with 2 percent coming each year over three years.

The contract also includes one additional personal day and some minor language changes, Superintendent Dr. Maureen Murray said. Committee members Shannon Hume, David Ringius, Jr. and Pam Kiley served on the negotiation committee.

"We believe it is a very fair contract," Murray said.

The contract is for fiscal years 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Several groups representing Braintree workers have reached final or tentative agreements on contracts featuring 6 percent raises over three years. The Teamsters, school cafeteria workers and school custodians have also reached agreements.

Police, fire and library union members have yet to finalize contracts, Mayor Joseph Sullivan said.

The BEA contract, Sullivan said, is affordable for the town and a good deal for the teachers.

"It strikes the right balance," he said.
