Braintree Students at Fontbonne Academy Receive Mass Maritime Award

Fontbonne Academy is a Catholic all-girls high school located in Milton, MA. It is a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston.

Fontbonne Academy juniors Julia Butts of Braintree and Eliza McDonald of Quincy were recently awarded the JWL (Junior Women Leaders) in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) award from Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

After being nominated by a Fontbonne guidance counselor, the students submitted an application including a resume, essay, transcript, and recommendations.

On Thursday, May 10, Julia and Eliza attended an awards ceremony at Massachusetts Maritime Academy with their parents. There, they met with cadets, toured the campus and enjoyed dinner including a keynote speech from a current professor at the college.

At the dinner, Eliza McDonald was recognized as one of the top three applicants among the pool of STEM awardees and announced as a scholarship recipient.  Eliza was awarded a full tuition scholarship for her first year at Massachusetts Maritime Academy should she choose to enroll there in the fall of 2013.

“We are so proud of our students.  Fontbonne’s math and science curricula are challenging, and Julia and Eliza have truly excelled. These awards reflect their dedication and hard work,” said Head of School Mary Ellen Barnes.
