Sullivan Leads Mayors Association Tour of Logan Airport

Joseph Sullivan is the President of the Massachusetts Mayors' Association.

Mayor Joseph Sullivan joined several other Boston-area mayors last month on a tour of Logan Airport, to learn about the facility's economic role, visit the airfield and check out the airport's fire rescue operations.

Sullivan, president of the Massachusetts Mayors’ Association, led a delegation hosted by the Massachusetts Port Authority and its CEO Thomas P. Glynn.

“Massport is a vital ingredient to the health of our state’s economy,” Sullivan said in a statement. “The tour provided gave us a firsthand look at their operations. We were all very impressed.”

Logan is like a city itself, Glynn explained, and has its own fire and police departments, a power plant, a chapel, two hotels, acres of landscaping, and employs more than 20,000 men and women.

“It’s only fitting that we welcome the mayors from these communities because we can learn from them and they can learn more about how our ‘city’ functions and contributes to the economy of Massachusetts," Glynn said in the statement.

Logan offers nonstop service to 76 domestic and 35 international destinations and in 2012 handled 29.3 million passengers. It is served by two public transit lines and is the Air Line Pilot Association’s Airport of the Year for 2008 because of its commitment to safety, according to a Massport press release.

Over the past decade, the airport spent $4.5 billion on a modernization program that includes new terminals, public transportation access, parking facilities, roadways and airport concessions, and has been transformed into a world-class 21st century $7 billion in total economic impact each year.
