Kate Naughton Sworn into School Committee Seat

Other Braintree election results were still pending Tuesday night.

While the rest of the Braintree's election results remained in limbo, with poll workers counting nearly 1,100 write-in votes for the four-year School Committee race, one candidate was in the high-speed lane.

Kate Naughton, the sole person running for a two-year School Committee seat, was sworn in at 10 p.m. at Town Hall Tuesday night by Town Clerk Joe Powers.

She takes over the seat left vacant by the resignation of Joe Zarrella earlier this year, and so her service took effect immediately upon the clerk's announcement of her win.

"I'm very excited and very relieved," Naughton said. "I needed to know for sure and I'm thrilled to be sworn-in this evening."

Naughton will serve the rest of this year and then be sworn-in again with the rest of the elected committee members in January.

Sarah Nichols, appointed to fill the vacancy until Tuesday's election, declined to run for the seat after pulling nominating papers.

David Ringius, Jr. and Cyril Chafe were the only nominated candidates for three, four-year School Committee seats. Several other residents offered write-in campaigns.
