With behind it and equipment being ordered this week, few hurdles remain for the opening of the long-anticipated .
The mayor's office signed off on ordering the playground components on Monday through Braintree-based Northeast Playground Builders, Bill Hedlund, director of the recreation department, said at a meeting of the project's planning committee on Monday night. It should take about four weeks for the parts to come in, with a construction schedule expected to be finalized after that.
"We're optimistic that we'll have a grand opening in October sometime," District 6 Councilor Paul "Dan" Clifford said.
That depends largely on whether the Planning Board grants an exception to its site plan review process that Hedlund said would be requested formally on Tuesday. The next scheduled meeting of the Planning Board is Sept. 13.
Hedlund said that no playground has undergone site plan review in his 40 years working in Braintree. It came up on this project because a zoning amendment includes language concerning a review.
"There's no secrets," Hedlund said. "It's been out there in the public view."
The playground will be located on a piece of land purchased last year by the town at the intersection of South and Washington streets. It will be just more than half an acre – about double the size of the Hollis Playground.
Bill O'Neill, owner of Northeast Playground Builders, has been working with the disabilities commission to make sure there is more than enough handicap access. Addititional equipment, such as tables with extra space for wheelchairs and a large handi-capable swing will likely be included, he said, and the playground as designed meets Americans With Disabilities Act requirements.
"There's a lot of ease of access," O'Neill said.
Along with the equipment order being placed this week, the Department of Public Works will soon start excavation work on the site, followed by an engineering analysis.
Requests for bids will also go out, one for the supply and installation of the playground's fence and another for the installation of the equipment.
