Field of Candidates in Braintree Taking Shape

Several Braintree residents who obtained nominating paperwork for the local election this fall will not move forward after Tuesday's submission deadline.

The loss of those potential contenders, combined with a relative lack of candidates this year, means few contested races, including one, four-year seat on the School Committee that is going uncontested.

Sarah Nichols, serving temporarily in the seat formerly occupied by Joe Zarrella, said Monday that she would not continue her campaign for that four-year seat for family reasons. 

Philip Baldassini, who took out papers for District 5, and Michael Barbuto, who initially sought a Councilor-at-Large seat, both declined to return signatures to the Town Clerk's office. 

Kieren McDonough, a contender for the remaining two years of Zarrella's term on the School Committee, missed the 5 p.m. deadline Tuesday and provided an insufficient number of signatures, Town Clerk Joe Powers said.

Below is a list of the candidates in the Nov. 5, 2013 election that have submitted signatures for certification by the Board of Registrars. Those signatures – nearly 6,000 in total – will be examined and either certified or not. 

Candidates for Town Council, School Committee and other posts needed to obtain between 50 and 150 signatures. Councilor-at-Large and School Committee candidates need within their 150 signature total at least 25 from each of Braintree's six districts.

A ballot position lottery will be held Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
