DeLeo Set to Unveil Gun Control Bill Proposal Tuesday

House Speaker Robert DeLeo is expected to unveil his long-awaited bill to address gun violence in the wake of the 2012 Newtown, CT shooting where a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Massachusetts currently has one of the toughest gun laws in the country.

A DeLeo spokesman promises the legislation being introduced Tuesday will be "comprehensive" and maintain Massachusetts' status as a national leader in gun safety, according to the Boston Herald.

Massachusetts’ current gun laws were enacted in 1998 making the state one of the strictest in the nation. That legislation banned semi-automatic assault weapons, as well as magazines holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The laws also required all firearms to be locked and secured.

While the details of the bill are unknown, the Boston Herald is reporting the proposal will draw from the 44 recommendations of a panel earlier this year appointed by the speaker suggesting ways to further reduce gun violence in the state.
