Council Approves AG Letter on Open Meeting Law Complaint

The Town Clerk filed a complaint against the Braintree Town Council.

Members of the Town Council approved a letter Thursday that will be sent to the Attorney General's office in response to an allegation that the council violated the state's Open Meeting Law while crafting a travel and expense policy

Councilors Sean Powers and Charles Ryan thanked Town Solicitor Carolyn Murray for her work on the letter, which states that the council did not violate the law, as alleged by Town Clerk Joe Powers.

In his complaint, Powers argued that the specificity of meeting notices for Committee on Rules & Ordinance and Committee on Ways & Means meetings on Nov. 19 and Nov. 25 was not adequate.

Despite arguing that the council did not violate the law, the letter lays out remedial action that was taken, including avoiding discussion of the travel policy and associated audit on Dec. 3 and providing clarification of proposed action in agendas for special meetings Dec. 9.
